Attention Deficit Disorder: Is it just a label that teachers and parents use to "calm down" a child who might be asking questions that adults can't answer? When I was growing up, they didn't use this label, but teachers did complain that I asked too many questions, and that I was too restless "for my own good".

Are we stifling our children's natural creativity and curiosity with drugs?

Attention Deficit Disorder drugs are over-prescribed.
Nowadays, classes are too big for these troublemakers.
Children, schmildren...who cares?
they'll b using their own drugs soon enough
snorted Ritalin is a nice rush

COMMENTS:
You're correct. If parents gave their kids the attention and discipline they needed, kids today wouldn't need all these drugs. Now, I'm going to catch hell for this, but it's partly the Women's Movement that has caused a lot of the problems kids have today. When I was a kid, the fathers worked and the mothers stayed home with their children. Day-care centers were just for poor people and most children weren't raised by strangers. The kids that act up today are probably screaming for attention - the attention they didn't get from their parents in their formative years. When more women entered the work force the kids were dumped off at day-care centers. I think a woman can be just as good a worker as a man, but she can't be both a good worker AND a good mother (refering to mothers of babies to pre-schoolers). If the father stays home - fine. If the grandparents take care of the kids, that's fine, too. Even a good nanny is better than a day-care center. But the early institutionalization of children has got to go.

Drug for kids and children is just the latest craziest thing we heard of from America. In Europe no kids or children get prescription of such drugs. 'Ask too many questions' or being 'too lively' are seen as positive signs of life. What will be of these kids when they'll grow up? Good obedient drugged citizen? That's just horrible... I think Pharmaceutical companies are playing a lead role in this trend. Never forget profit...

Yes... I think some teachers and most parents have become unforgivingly lazy. It starts as early as circumcision mutilation... considering it's not done for health issues, but social, as well as laziness on the part of parents having to deal with the small amount of maintenance needed for foreskin. Then there's the favorite modern day babysitter, video games and television. By the time children become school age, spoiled and unruly, it's easier to stick with tradition and incorporate sedation. This also creates a full proof scapegoat for parents to shift blame and pursue lawsuits on the influences on their children's lives, where as 99.9% of the time the parents are solely responsible. So yes, I believe that children are getting an early taste of the magical world of prescription drugs, the easy way out and "I'm a victim of society" hoopla! Although, I believe prescribed properly, it would be an effective tool for true ADD cases. I too, would have been the prime candidate as a youth, aaaAAAhhHHhhAAAaaa, but instead waited until I was an adult, crushed it and snorted it through a rolled bill as a recreational drug, Woohoo, but only tried it twice!

*Thanks* for all this nice feedback! It's so GREAT to find other people who feel like I do on this issue. I know a couple of people whose children are on Ritalin and it's hard not to say something that might sound like a "lecture" when I am around them. My polite comments have always been met with a chilly reception, so I have to keep a sock in it. This is a wonderful opportunity to vent! I feel like "anonymously" sending the URL for this ballot to some parents I know. But would they be open-minded enough - or even take the time - to understand the benefits of the discussion? Doubtful.

Any excuse to medicate large numbers of the population and the pharmacueticals giants will take up the opportunity, aided and abetted by the doctors. Kids, old people, nobody is safe. No-one I tell you!
