The AP Reports that, A military jury convicted a U.S. soldier Friday of desertion for leaving his combat unit in Iraq in protest of the war. Staff Sgt. Camilo Mejia of the Florida National Guard was found guilty by a jury of four officers and four enlisted soldiers, and he is scheduled to be sentenced Friday afternoon to faced up to a year in jail and a bad conduct discharge. Mejia testified Thursday that he disobeyed orders to return to his unit after a furlough because he planned to seek status as a conscientious objector and his attorneys had also argued that he walked away from the war partly to avoid orders to abuse Iraqi prisoners. Mejia was missing from the Army for five months before turning himself in last March because, he became upset after seeing civilians hit by gunfire and watching an Iraqi boy die after confusion over which military doctor should treat him. Mejia, 28, failed to return to his unit in Iraq after a two-week furlough in October. However, he turned himself in to the Army in March after being gone five months, saying he did not want to fight in an oil-driven war. After returning in March to Fort Stewart, Mejia applied to become a conscientious objector, saying his experiences in Iraq had made him opposed to war. Yes/No, are this Sergeant's explanation for desertion justified, why or why not? Should he spend a day in prison, why or why not? Do you consider this Sergeant to be a coward? Why or Why not?

He is a coward, plain and simple.
Its about time people start to stand up and refuse to DIE behind a LIE told by Bush.
Why should he be made to go give his life for a war he does not believe in?
As an American, you should respect the orders given to you to defend your country.
Why should he remain and be forced to participate in acts of violence against others?
Yes, he should go to prison, he broke the law, period.
He was judged by other soldiers, that wasn't a fair trial.
Darn if he do, darn if don't, he can win for losing.
Don`t die for the Jew occupied government of USA
It's ok for Bush to desert though, COWARD

COMMENTS:
I think he's a gutless, coward, SOB, whos's not worthy of being called an American! If we had the choice, I would gladly swap him for Nick Berg! Since we don't, he should be made to spend his year in an Iraqi or Afghanistan prison.

I would do the same if I was forced into war. But if he personally wanted to sign for the army then its his problem. He should have known that armies have to fight for lie sometime.
