The question reminds me of a story by Arthur C Clarke called 'The Nine Billion Names of God', in which a group of programmers sit down and create an algorithm that will link all of Earth's computers together, with the intention of asking the question, "Does God exist?". Once the programmers start the algorithm, and pose the question, the answer is chilling.

computers will not neccesarily "rule" mankind, but they will have such control over us that it will be very easy for the humans controlling the computers, to control man.
