I used to live in orange county, which is the wealthiest county in the United States. Ironically it also had the highest divorce rates. Turns out that young beautiful women marry these rich professional men for their money, but obviously the marriage is not built on love and results in divorce. Also, when the woman's looks start to fade, she is soon relegated to the first wives club. It's superficial behavior from both genders basically.
It won't sound so odd once you're...oh, say..18. :-)
I'd say that there were just about as many people back in the 1930's-1950's (before the divorce rate began climbing again drastically in the early 1960's) who WANTED to get divorced, but state laws made divorce very difficult (long waiting periods, expensive and long court proceedings, and draconian statutes severely limiting the grounds for divorce) plus societal attitudes made divorce social leprosy of a kind. The vast changes in sexual attitudes in the 1960's combined with a legislative loosening of restrictions in the 1970's, especially the adding of "no fault" divorces, opened the floodgates. I don't know that there's such a societal crash and burn going on, unless you consider the new attitudes of American society and the new laws a form of decadence. That's certainly arguable.
It's well worth considering, though, that the 1920's had a relatively high divorce rate compared to the 1930's and 1940's, when economic collapse and a sort of more conservative attitude about marriage resumed compared to the excesses of the much more prosperous Jazz Age. There was a kind of battening down of the hatches that took place with the Great Depression and World War II and the American people seemed to respond in kind, even on a personal level.

U.S. society teaches that if it doesn't work, get rid of it!
I can think of three reasons off the bat.
First off, women feel more liberated here because they are taught feminism and independence from an early age. They are more educated and have their own careers, making them less emotionally and financially independent.
Second off we are taught immediate gratification here. We are living for a sensory high here, what with all the emphasis on consumerism, "if it's broke throw it away and buy a new one" and we do not value things. We live for sensory gratification. We don't care about people and we are inclined to treat people as another object to be consumed.
Third off the system here has done away with the concept of family. Family values do not make the economy any money, like if you pass down a house from generation to generation it is not making the banks and the realtors any money, and if a kid doesn't move out of the house once he turns 18, then he is not spending his money on his own apartment, car and furniture, so that screws the economy if you're sharing. So the first thing to go in this blatant capitalism was the family. This society is turning very Brave New World and it makes me pretty sick to my stomach.

Because the religous right presses marriage on everyone by rewarding married people. Tax breaks, Insurance breaks, and if you arent married they look down on you like you are scum because you are living with your man/woman out of wedlock. Fucking assholes. Then after these people were pressued into getting married they realized what a croc of shit it is and they divorce.
Lotta people say premartial sex. I just think people are never satisfied and are completely ungrateful for what they posess.

Anyway... the divorce rate is high due in part to, as many people have already said, feminism. Another reason, as also previously stated, is that people don't think things through enough before getting married. A lot of kids are in too big a hurry to move out of their parents' house. Remember: you've got your entire lives ahead of you. Don't try to rush the course of things. You'll find Mr. or Ms. Right sooner or later, and hopefully his/her first name won't be Always.

listen to felix he's dead on...poop you are correct sir!...and hotbottom we must be soul sisters cause i also had a horrible childhood because my mom wouldn't/couldn't divorce my dad. i not only wished my parents had divorced, but when i was a little innocent kid i wished my dad would DIE. i compared notes with my siblings many years later and they were shocked because they'd thought the same way. it should not have to come to that. if a couple doesn't get along for whatever reason they should be allowed to go their separate ways.
my mom says now that divorce should be free and it should cost a thousand dollars to get married. i so agree.

The divorce rate within the united states is very misleading, because if you look at the success rate of FIRST TIME marriages in the United States, it's around 73% (at least it was about 5 years ago when I was reading an article about it in US News and World Report).
It's when you take into account 2nd and 3rd time etc. marriages that the success rate drops dramatically.
One thing to realize about this, however, is that many first time marriages that stay together due so for religious purposes or for children, this is why religious leaders are misleading people when they say how people who are 'strong' in the church remain strong in marriage.
Many times those people will stay together simply because of the binding commitment of religion, and not for being in love with one another, meaning that they will remain miserable with each other rather than at least by at peace by themselves or find happiness with another.
People can not commit to anything nowadays.

ethnologists have noticed that in all times, cultures and places, when the relative status of women is low, so is the divorce rate, and when the relative status of women is high, so is the divorce rate. inequality leads to a more stable society, and any moves toward equality destablizes it. equal relationships naturally have more open disagreements, that is how common ground is reached between the two parties involved.

I'm only 18 and never have been married or been in love, and there is a difference between good sex and love. It's just exceptable now to get a divorce, look at society, if we will allow gays to be out of the closet sort of speak then we'll allow divorces.

It's because there's no point of marriage anymore. Why go through all that legal stuff when you could have a girlfriend without all that crap?
I sort of agree with poop and Obsessive_Compulsive that there is no point to marriage except to have a fancy ceremony. I don't even know why people want to live together except for financial convenience.
"Feminism" isn't to blame. Selfish, careless idiots are to blame. Nobody cares anymore, nobody commits anymore. Who cares if kids homes and sense of security is destroyed. We mustn't judge anything.
