DOES GOOD GRAMMAR MATTER TO YOU?

[+] serious ballot by mojo
created Mon May 31, 04

In this age of email, instant messaging, text messaging, flawed teaching in schools, etc., are standards for grammar going down the toilet? Is it important that we preserve the quality of our language?

(Hope I haven't made any errors in this ballot!)

Doesn't matter to me.
Without good standards, meanings get muddy, resulting in miscommunication.
George Orwell predicted it in "1984" with the horrors of Newspeak.
George W. Bush is a perfect example of why good language matters.
not where I would correct someone elses.
Those with bad grammar come across as children

as long as I understand what people are saying it doesnt matter while i am on the internet, if I speak to my customers the way i type on the internet, i would probably wouldnt have any.

it don't matter 2 me

Actually, it does matter to me. It drives me absolutely insane when people don't use good grammar, punctuation, etc. It's like they're saying, "Hi there! I'm dumb!"
by xxxxxxxx on Mon May 31, 04 12:59pm [+]

I don't believe good grammer is an indication of intelligence, it would be very important if you are a secretary who types letters, but you don't have to be a genius to be a secretary.

by Duckhead on Mon May 31, 04 3:08pm [+]

I think it's more offinsive to correct another adults grammer than the poor grammer itself.
by Tadema on Mon May 31, 04 3:21pm [+]

Our language is the only means we have of communicating with each other and I have already seen examples of people from "English Speaking" countries, unable to communicate in other English Speaking countries. How long before no-one is able to make themselves understood?
by Bibendum on Mon May 31, 04 7:06pm [+]

If you can "correct it" you`ve already understood it.
by LRonCupboard on Mon May 31, 04 7:09pm [+]

People will try to justify Internet shorthand as a way of typing faster, but all of that is bullshit because that shorthand looks like complete shit. As far as I'm concerned, other than some abbrevations, fuck Internet shorthand. I mean, what the fuck does "blk" mean? Bronx Latin Kings? Budweiser Lite Kegs? Bleak? Oh wait, those teenyboppers meant to say black when they said "blk". Spelling "you" as "u" is only acceptable if you were writing in Dutch. Why in tha name of fucking common sense are people spelling anything that ends in -ere as -urr? That is just wack to me, just because some flavor-of-the-month rappers keeps saying it in their wack ass rhymes. And what is up with spelling words with numbers? Why are people that stupid, lazy or uneducated to stupid shit like that? And did I mention "i" being subsituted for "y", "s" being substituted for "z", because it looks "cool" or whatever?

Long story short, Internet shorthand is not only destroying our vocabulary, and our grammar as a result. I'm only 18, but I will catch a fucked up stroke the day I see an editorial written entirely in that migrane-inducing way of writing.
by CriminalMinded on Mon May 31, 04 11:08pm [+]

Damn it, there is some errors in my post that I cannot edit. Being immersed in that weak shorthand has messed me up.

My spelling isnt to bad but people don't seem to understand what im saying.I sound kind of irish and sort of british and some scotish thrown in my wife understands me though and she has a french accent lol if i speak french my accent gets carried over sound worse than jean chretien.
by vanman1970 on Wed Jun 02, 04 10:31am [+]

I have said before that I tend not to take seriously anybody with atrocious grammar and spelling. I'm prejudiced, I admit. Just because people are uneducated doesn't mean they're evil. Where I come from, a lot of people are poor rural types (of all races) with less access to education. I'm really only offended when people choose to be ignorant.

Really, it's when people rant and speak in total kneejerk speech while not thinking about what they're saying. That's what tempts me to think a mass extinction of most of the human race might not be a bad idea. I think, "this guy could be my brother", and it embarrases me.

I just taught myself to believe that communication is so important, and that includes learning what words really mean, how to spell them right, and the whole rules of grammar. America wants the whole world to speak English but can barely speak it itself. That seems nihilistic if you ask me.
by LudwigVan on Wed Jun 02, 04 6:48pm [+]

And I probably didn't make a lot of sense with that previous statement of mine either. I think it's rubbing off on me.
by LudwigVan on Wed Jun 02, 04 6:49pm [+]

then what is ebonics? does that constitute poor grammer??/
by venusflytrap on Thu Jun 03, 04 12:47am [+]

While one doesn't have to get obsessed about it, good grammar tends to result in better communication: better accuracy, greater precision, more depth of ideas.
by Cathexis on Tue Aug 03, 04 1:49pm [+]

I'm afraid I'm quite anal about it. I get more annoyed with bad grammar than I really should. However, I know how annoying it can be to be corrected - especially as we all make typing errors - so I keep my fumes within!
by keithsheen on Tue Aug 03, 04 1:59pm [+]

It seems as if language is being deliberately dumbed down. The media panders to the lowest common denominator. Some concepts are difficult to express or grasp with limited motherfucking vocabulary.
by Heretic on Tue Aug 03, 04 11:04pm [+]

yes it does...the net is killing the English language. Crap like LOL,ROFLMAO,:-),etc.etc. should be banned.TYPE THE BLOoDY WORD!!!
