So I have found out the hard way just how expensive drugs are in this country, compared to others. Being able to go abroad to order them on the Internet has been both a godsend and a learning experience. The meds I have to buy are ALL less than 1/2 the cost in foreign countries; I literally could not afford the meds I need if I had to buy them here. Our pharmaceutical conglomerates sell their products to foreign countries at a FRACTION of the cost - and they're still making a fat profit. American citizens, unfortunately, do not have this same privilege...even those on Medicare. Being a powerful lobby, these companies made sure they didn't have to compete with foreign drug makers in any price war - they want theirs, even if it means bilking old people. Dubya and his cronies saw to that. These conglomerates like to point to the expense of research for new drugs as a reason why costs are so high. But if you actually look at the numbers, they spend a lot more money on advertising than research. Every time you see one of those nauseating ads on TV, you can be sure you (or your insurance company) is paying for every cent. And WHY can they sell drugs abroad so cheaply if it's all about "research"? When U.S. citizens have to pay full price? One med I buy - Singulair, a new drug - costs less than half from England, and it's comes the U.S. packaging! U.S. Pharmaceutical companies seem to be all about the bottom line, not human beings. That doesn't seem right to me. What do you think? Yes, they're evil. No, they're making honest money. I don't care because I don't have to pay for meds.
