Automatics are probably better in heavy city traffic as holding a car on the clutch for an hour can get quite uncomfortable. In every other situation manual gives far better control and acceleration. Even the best automatic gearbox can't see a hill or a bend ahead and change gear in advance. Automatics are frustrating to drive.

The purpose of a car is to get me and my stuff from point A to point B. A manual transmission only adds a needless layer of complexity to that.
