DO YOU THINK RACIAL PROFILING IS BAD?

Is it bad if there is extra attention drawn to a particular ethnic group without interfering in there daily life?
My point being, I am a minority, but if my particular nationality were known for causing problems(and I know there isnt a WHOLE nationality known for causing problems), I think I would accept the fact that people are going to be leery of me. I may be wrong but if people searching my bags more often then others at the airport would make the rest of the world feel better and make us all safer, by all means search my stinking bags. And if searching the Indian guys bags because he is wearing a turbin, whom has no connection to Islam whatsoever will make people feel safer then I am all for it. As with anything there is a line though, just finding it is going to differ with everyone. DO you think racial profiling is completly wrong, or do you think there is some sense to it?

Its wrong
If it makes us safer, it is good

I think they still need probable cause beyond reasonable doubt.Or Are we guilty till proven innocent?
by Qui_Qui on Tue Jun 15, 04 5:28pm [+]

Well I don't think it would be guilty until proven innocent, it is merely an axtra precaution.
Let me try to put this on a smaller scale so I can show you the way I am seeing it.
You're at the local carnival in Beverly Hills when you hear that there is a band of boys wearing a red shirt and red hat causing problems,if the police start stopping kids that are wearing red shirts and hats, does that mean that they are profiling and invading the privacy of innocent people, yes, to a degree, but was there intent to harm, degrade or accuse?

I guess it depends on the way on which people are affected by the racial profiling, but non-intrusive profiling such as "keeping a closer eye" shouldnt bother people if they are doing nothing wrong right?

They profile men because we commit more crimes, why not races that commit more crimes?

Wow, NHBman, that comment kinda contradicts your profile.

Racial profiling...it's like the Bush administration..almost no one likes it, we wanna stop it but it's just gonna continue.

It is wrong.

Whenever the freedoms of a group are abridged, it lends itself to abuse and bias, over time. It quickly becomes a form of instituionalized prejudice and further distancing/abuse becomes acceptable.

Besides: I don't want to get frequently strip-searched by overzealous cops just because the majority of serial killers are quiet white males!
by Cathexis on Mon Jun 28, 04 11:45am [+]

Duck: Looking for suspects based on clothing or a description, involving a discrete crime/problem, in a particular location, is one thing. Institutionalizing searches based on race/nationality on an ongoing/permanent basis is a completely different thing.

Freedoms we give up as a knee-jerk reaction to fear are rarely won back.
by Cathexis on Mon Jun 28, 04 11:48am [+]

minorities are profiled to be little angels who can do no wrong and are victims off the "evil white man", whcih is entirely false, and the other way round
