I have a hard time believing that such poverty exists in United States. If there is such a situation, it is the fault of poor planning on the parent's part. Food is not all that expensive. and Children don't eat much. I see people who claim poverty who still have enough money for tobacco, alcohol, drugs, or even lottery tickets (Yes, I have seen cases like this) I guess it's a matter of priority, not poverty.

Yes, you are exactly right! It is funny how parents in those situations have enough money for their wants but not for their needs.
Poverty sure does exist in the United States, sometimes out of their control. Ever had your house burnt down, or ripped apart by a tornado or flooded? There will be a period of time where that family will have to struggle. Trust me, my best friend's home caught on fire. And it took almost a year to recover. They now live in a small duplex home, struggling to put any food on the table.
On this site, I barely directly attack anyone on this site, but in this case I can't resist. LCD: I cannot believe how far your anti-american attitudes will go. With regards to your first comment, I cannot help but laugh. Do you actually think that in the United States, there are only two extremes: the rich or the poor drug users/drunks? Well if that's the case you need to wake up and realize that there are poor people in the United States just as there are in any other country. Sure, there are cases where it is drug or alcohol related, but NOT always. Not only did my friend's house burn down, but at the same time two other things happened. Her car broken down, and would cost lots of money to repair. And her dad developed some sort of kidney problem and needed surgery. So, is this a matter of priority or poverty LCD? I think you have made a horrible mistake in what you said. Sometimes things happen out of our control, and you need to realize that.
I have run low on food before. I have also before I have allowed that to happen given up my vices or party favors. When we ran low, yes I let my children eat before I did. When you live paycheck to paycheck sometimes thats the situation. The last day or two before payday and not wanting to borrow money from friends or family what choices are left?
Well LCD you are evidently lucky or blessed. Have you ever lost your job due to no fault of your own and had to take a minimum wage paying job just to survive? I have and let me tell you it is no fun at all.
look, you all... there is a totally disproportionate gap between the wealthy and poor in this country. AND it is NOT the poor person's fault! it is extremely difficult to become rich in this country. EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. even people that own businesses struggle and cannot even get medical insurance. if you don't believe me, that's fine... you can do your own reasearch and discover for yourself. anyway, i am dissolutioned with being an american today. i live in miami, and some areas of miami look worse than falluja, iraq. there are people so poor they don't have shoes... all of this in the proud USA. well, i for one don't see how we can be so prosperous in this country. people starve and die every day in this country. yet there are people rich beyond avarice not too far away. something MUST be done about this if this country is to survive another century. i am dead serious about this. listen to bow_2_the_queen. she is right about this. when a disaster destroys your life, there is no aid for you. the USA is a cold country. it is a hypocrite because everything it makes you see and hear say otherwise. but it really is. God Forbid, that you get sick in this country. Gof forbid, that a tornado destroys your house. God forbid, that you get mangled in a car wreck. as far as LCD, you are an arrogant prick. you better PRAY that none of the aformentioned circumstances happens to you. it's sad really, that many people are arrogant and indifferent to the miserable plight of others, especially in this country. if the rich and wealthy actually cared about helping others instead of themselves, what a great country the USA would surely be! yet it is not... don't believe what you see and hear. it'll fool you. this country is is INCREDIBLY SAD SHAPE... ECONOMICALLY AND MORALLY. this country is shaping up to become like india, were 1% have 75% of the money, and 99% have 25% of the money. i am not against this country. i love the USA. i was born and raised here and i'll die and be buried here. but i know that the rich and wealhty in this country are getting richer, and the poor and definately getting poorer. we are not better off today than we were after WW2 and we will continue to decline until we become a country like india or russia, were a tiny minority have all of the wealth and it is impossible to get rich. the only thing that will solve the trouble in this country is a mass social reform on an incalculable scale. corporations need to be re-structured. social security needs to be built back up again. health care needs to made public. banks and financial institutions need to be shut down, and a third and fourth political party needs to be created.
Does anyone here realise a gallon of milk is more thana gallon of gas? Say you bring home 1300$ a month.Rent , utilities & gas take all but maybe 200$ for food for a month.for a family of three thats imposible to live on.& Please no one better get sick because there is no insurance money & the state says you make too much for medical assistance. Its a reality for MANY.
There certainly is poverty in the United States. A lot of people can get help for it, but there are still people out there. Believe me, I know about this, like is says in my information, I live in Oregon. Not only is Oregon poor itself, a lot of people are too. And since Oregon itself is poor (actually, the gov. has just used out money wrongly, but yeah) we can't afford things like homeless shelters, soup kitchens, etc. Poverty definetley exists.
I greatly encourage people who think poverty doesnt exist to volunteer time at a food bank. You will see the multitudes & that all walks of life are in serious need.
WOW guys, I am proud of you! These are some really in depth views of what you guys think and know. I am just 17 so dont ask for my opinion, I hardly know as much as you guys.
NHBMan: I totally agree with everything you said. EVERYTHING. Mystikalknight: Hey, don't let the fact that you're 17 years old prevent you from speaking your mind! I am 17 myself! :)
I felt kinda stupid agreeing with LCD because all of you are disagreeing with him. I'm surprised nobody has attacked me verbally.
Well what reasons do you agree with lcd? Because we clearly do not. I appreciate all he's done for this site, but I completely am against what he said.
I agreed with the part where he said "I see people who claim poverty who still have enough money for tobacco, alcohol, drugs, or even lottery tickets. I dont think its right when people in those situations go out and buy drugs/alcohol and gamble with the little bit of money they may have its just stupid.
Well yeah he's right on that. There are people with serious addictions, who were selfish and led their family to poverty. BUT I feel he is totally wrong when he says "I have a hard time believing that such poverty exists in United States. If there is such a situation, it is the fault of poor planning on the parent's part." I already said why a few comments ago.
