because they are stuck on this awful reality tv and lazy ass's buy into it as if the shit is real and the producers aren't pulling their little puppet strings.
My guess: a combination of cost-aversion and risk-aversion. The easiest money is to be had aiming at the broadest segments ... and obviously they have a poor opinion of this demographic.
The sad thing is that the movie industry is recycling older, crappy TV shows now so in the future, movies with be based on the dreck that's on TV now.
If they are just after profits they should realize that there is a huge audience out here that wants better crap. Sure they are feeding the center of the bell curve but its a big bell and the edges make up millions of people, just in the US. If stuff is really good it will get exported and so more money. But we in the US also suffer from a dearth of shows from other countries. Seems that I used to see lots more foreign content back in the 70s music videos, performances, for. lang. movies, toons, interview and news shows. maybe just xenophobia.
