One thing is the mass though, other thing is the individual. Even if the mass lives in quiet desperation, the individual in it may have no feeling of the desperation lying around, and its forms. The desperation pops out when private things start to fall apart, go briefly into pieces. That's the theme of many modern great novels (Franzen, for example)- It's really the 'big' secret about life in our society-
