WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON RESERVE/NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS COMPARED TO FULL TIMERS?

Certainly with what happened in the Iraqi prison, the reserves got a distinct black eye. But even without that, it's interesting how the regular army, marines, etc, seem to have this opinion that they are better than the part timers.

I have seen a national guard unit, the now disbanded A. Co. 1/134th Inf. (MECH) 35th Div, kick the crap out of the 82nd airborne at Fort Irwin, National Training Center, in California.

In a giant dangerous rocky area called the Goat's Pass, the national guard unit in question went in with squad sized elements and went position to position on a full frontal assault and just obliterated the 82nd airborne, climbing in some cases upwards of 120 feet into the air above the desert floor, until finally 2 of the 134th infantry troops took out the CP of the 82nd airborne company high above the field of combat with a safe kill.

This is just one example of what I saw during 2 weeks at NTC. Today's national guard and reserve troops are well trained and just as capable in the field of combat as the regulars, and they also hold civilian jobs on the side and are expected to be tactically and technologically proficient within their military jobs as well.

What are your thoughts about 'weekend warriors'?

*please do not make this a forum about the troops from the prison in iraq, they are not a decent representation of reserve troops and having already given the reserves a black eye, we need not bring that up again*

The national guard/reserves are just as capable
part timers just can't get the job done at all
Come on Jappy, where's the punchline :o)

It's shame the A. Co. 1/134th Inf. (MECH) 35th Div aren't still around. Thye would make great cannon fodder in the coming wars.

cretin you are an ignorant fool, the 134th Infantry Division fought alongside British troops in Normandy in WWII, and also were instrumental is securing St. Lo despite a defensive perimeter heavily fortified by the Germans with hedgrow defense and sunken roads. Your lack of brain cells is only surpassed by your lack of historical knowledge.

I believe the Reserves are useful for many functions, especially support and logistics, but not for direct combat. Reason: The standing army spends a lot more time training. The Reserves do a great job ... for the amount of training the receive.

jenny17. I was talking about the wars that are on the way, not previous ,population culling, profiteering wars.
The only reason reserves are an issue is because pretty soon everybody between the ages of 18 and 26 will end up serving.

It all depends. A lot of it starts at the top. If you have a good commander, then your unit will be productive and well-trained. Doesn't matter if you're reg. Army or reserves/nat'l guard. Before deployment, any guard or reserve unit will be activated and given a good amount of time to train and refresh their skills.

here is aus, we refer to them as 'weekend warriors' being the part timers, army reserves...but it's very admirable that blokes like yourself rob give up their time to keep the borders of the free world safe...OK,enough of that...a good soldier ALWAYS shaves his ass for the hygeine of his platoon...you really MUST shave that thing...it's way way out of control !
