COMMENTS:
This is a great poll jenny17, and yes the NAACP is organized solely to promote the advancement of it's own race, which is indeed racist. The KKK and the NAACP is in the same boat because the NAACP defends black criminals who kill white victims. There is a double standard for whites and blacks due to a dangerous thing called 'political correctness'. Other racist groups are the ADL which a a jewish supremacist group and MECA the Mexican supremacist hate group. Basically all these people need to find something more meaningful in life besides their ethnic backgrounds. It's kind of sad actually.
Not yet, I am trying to get a job there.

I'm with you all the way couchgnome.
I dont think the NAACP is a bad thing, well sometimes it is, but I think that even if you are white and you beleive you have been discriminated against that they will help you. I may be wrong but I plan on testing this soon. The problem lies with some other (colored) people that if we had a White Association to protect us from reverse discrimintation that some blacks would go absolutly ape-shit about it. That bothers me.
Wheres Barbara at for this one?
I'm noy really sure about what they really do other than providing Michal Jackson with some body guards.
Can non-blacks join the NAACP?
To better understand the NAACP, it is essential that you put it in historical context. First off, the NAACP was formed in 1909, initially calling themselves the National Negro Committee. I suppose they decided to use the word 'colored' to included other races that were persecuted before, during, and after that time. Those words were the language of the day. And that time was so prejudiced that 'racist' doesn't really begin to describe it. This was only two generations after human slavery had been officially abolished. Many people still regarded blacks as sub-human savages, and the country was fully segregated. If you haven't seen 'Birth of a Nation' (1915), check it out. THAT'S sad. Let's look at a few highlights during the organization's history: 1913: Launches public protest against President Woodrow Wilson's official introduction of segregation into the Federal government. In 1918, after continued pressure from the NAACP, Wilson finally makes a public statement against lynching. 1935 - NAACP lawyers win the legal battle to admit a black student to the University of Maryland. 1941 - During World War II, the NAACP leads the effort to ensure that President Franklin Roosevelt employs a non-discrimination policy in war-related industries and the federal government. In 1948, the NAACP is able to pressure President Harry Truman to sign an executive order banning discrimination in the Federal government. 1946 - The NAACP wins a Supreme Court case which bans states from having laws that sanction segregated facilities in interstate travel by bus and train. 1954 - Wins a huge victory against segregation in schools, in which the Supreme Court rules in a unanimous decision that the "separate but equal" clause was unconstitutional because it violated the children's 14 amendment rights by separating them solely on the classification of the color of their skin. 1955 - Rosa Parks (a member of the NAACP) is regarded as the catalyst for the largest grassroots civil rights movement when she is arrested and fined for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Alabama. Other Black movements join with the NAACP in this matter. 1964 - U.S. Supreme court halts 8 years of effort in Alabama (See: Governor Wallace) to ban NAACP activities. Congress finally passes the Civil Rights Act, in which discrimination in education, employment, and all public accommodations is declared illegal. In 1965, the Voting Rights Act is passed, guaranteeing the right of all citizens to vote. Many blacks in the South had been intimidated into not voting up until that point. 1982 - The NAACP prevents President Reagan from giving a tax-break to the racially segregated Bob Jones University. 1991 - When avowed racist and former Klan leader David Duke runs for US Senate in Louisiana, the NAACP launches a voter registration campaign that yields a 76 percent turn-out of Black voters to defeat Duke. ...And here we are today. Through the actions of the NAACP and its' supporters during the past 100 years, racism is virtually a non-issue for many Americans such as myself. (22 years old and living in Northern California. Plus Im white, Im sure that helps.) That's something I like to think of as PROGRESS. I wrote a lot of facts about how the NAACP has improved the quality of the lives of black people in the United States. But those facts are hollow without applying meaning. Try to imagine yourself in the following situation (if you can): You and are your dark-skinned parents are sitting at home. Suddenly, two policemen burst through the door, grab your father on some trumped-up charge, and throw him in their truck. The next day, his body is discovered in a ditch. He has been beaten to death with a tire iron. You know who the culprits are, but what recourse do you have? Officers of the STATE have just murdered your father in cold blood. The case somehow makes it to trial, and they are found innocent by an all-white jury. Can you imagine how that might make you feel? This sort of thing is not a work of fiction. And my little NAACP timeline ignores far WORSE things that happened in the 133 years prior to it. This sort of racism and hatred does not just disappear when it officially becomes illegal. It is an attitude, a mode of thought, and a part of many people's collective identities. There are many people alive today who were born before, say, 1950. Most of those people actually UNDERSTAND the meaning of the word racism. (certainly better than I ever could) Now, given the fact that there are no more overt racist policies either sanctioned or approved of by the government (affirmative action is up for debate) - the argument could be made that all the NAACP does now is take on more frivolous cases. And if thats the truth, THANK GOD. So what do you want? Do you want the NAACP to change its' name so it is more of a civil rights organization than a racial organization, as you have apparently concluded? Or do you just want them to go away because civil rights and racial inequality aren't really an issue any more? People have a hard time letting go of the past. Some people feel that we would still be better off today if the South had won the war. WWII is endlessly studied, and not without good reason: the past has a HUGE bearing on what happens today, and what we decide to do tomorrow. I'm not a spokesman for the NAACP. If the NAACP has done something questionable, then I'd like to hear about it, and we can talk all day long about how the NAACP has gone wrong - but that will never, never change my opinion of the remarkable positive changes in the quality of millions of peoples lives they have affected during the last century.
And yes, Bostonian - of course they do! That would be pretty bad PR if they didn't. :)
The NAACP is itself among the most racist institutions in America. It breeds dependency on government rather than actually trying to help people help themselves. Even Bill Cosby -- America's Dad -- was blacklisted by them for suggesting that some African-American youth are only hurting themselves by resisting education and talking like they never made it past second grade. Moreover, the NAACP totally overlooks the fact that Bush put several African-Americans in Cabinet-level positions, including Colin Powell as Sec of State, Rod Paige as Sec of Education, Alphonso Jackson as Sec of Housing and Urban Development, and Condoleeza Rice as National Security Advisor. The only lip service going on is from the Democrats, who see African-Americans as a means to the end of staying in power. They have not nominated an African-American for the Supreme Court in over 35 years, despite numerous opportunities. The NAACP is no more than a club for black liberal elite, who take six-figure salaries from donations intended to help the needy. The NAAL(as in Liberal)CP hates the fact that Bush wants to give African-Americans a hand up rather than a hand out.
but Bush is still a moron
Couchgnome, are you Steven G.? Because your entire message is a direct quote from Steve commenting on the NAACP-related article in the New Mexican online. So here's a few counterpoints to Steve's comment... First of all, how precisely does it breed dependency on the government? By placing issues in front of the Government when necessary? There are individual chapters of the NAACP in every state (as far as I know) - that doesn't sound too federal to me. Also, the NAACP has been responsible for a HUGE number of *important public protests or sit-ins - no government dependance there. I don't understand the point, so please elaborate. If Bill Cosby was 'blacklisted' by the NAACP for the blunt comments he made about parents taking better care of their children, then why on earth would they have him as a speaker at the NAACP convention in Philadelphia on July 14, a few weeks after Bill said what he said? Furthermore, if you read his comments, there really isn't a whole lot outrageous about them, aside from the fact that they are totally candid, direct, and not politically correct. And in regards to Bush putting afro-americans in high places in the government, what do you want the NAACP to say? 'Thanks for putting more blacks in the cabinet?' - congratulating him for actually using the skin color of his nominees as a basis for their appointments?? I also fail to see the significance of the remark regarding the black Supreme Court justices. I only know 2: Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas. Clearly, I'm missing something..?
'And in regards to Bush putting afro-americans in high places in the government, what do you want the NAACP to say? 'Thanks for putting more blacks in the cabinet?' - congratulating him for actually using the skin color of his nominees as a basis for their appointments??' They would if he were a democrat.
Ahhhh... I can always count on you, herzog. I dunno what happened to CouchGnome.
This is gay man. Why are you guys hating on the NAACP is it because that they offering these people protection from racist groups like the KKK or is that you don't like to blacks in the safety of their own kind. A colored person can be anybody that is not considered white also, you know you guys just amaze me. Where is BarbaraBabyCakes and Cathexis anyway, this is a shame you can't compare them to the KKK. The KKK actively committted the most terrible crimes in america to make it become apart of the black american holocaust, the KKK killed millions of blacks morons.
Is it me or is racism and stupidity contagious.
This is as bad as when they put a whole group of people and compare them to women and homosexuals it just makes me sick.
So you don't like racism? Or you do? It's hard to tell.
