I mean, it seems illogical - but there may be instances where it is of a greater benefit for the growth and health of a species to have three sexes.

Think about it. I'm sure the results would be fascinating, and pretty kinky too. The only time they could procreate would be all together - barring that, some sort of egg and pouch-based relay system transmitting the seed back to the earth.

Or, they could be parasitical on each other. One could be a parasite on the body of another to mate with the final one. An advantage of this reproductive strategy would be increased offspring.

If the species was humanoid - can you IMAGINE the kinds of sexual theatrics that would involve..?!

That would never happen
It is possible for that to happen
It's not only possible, but I would like to be a part of their alien orgy

well, there are cases in nature where that does happen. Not really sexually, but in ants, they have the queen, fertilized by males, then taken care of by the drones. all 3 play crucial parts inteh development of the "child".
