DO ELECTRONIC BALLOTS, THAT DON'T HAVE A PAPER TRAIL, SEEM LIKE A GOOD IDEA WHEN WE ARE VOTING FOR A PRESIDENT?

I heard a report on the news about the new, "improved" ballots in Florida. Another election result was in question, and there was no way to double-check the outcome. The proponents of these ballots assure us that it wasn't the ballot software itself that was the problem, it was the STORAGE software. Whew, I'm glad they explained THAT problem...

This makes me nervous, and just a little paranoid. I realize that paper ballots are unwieldy, but how about devising a way to print out the results in a pinch?

Your thoughts and suggestions are most welcome.

No, not a good idea.
Yes, great idea; save the forests.
No sure

COMMENTS:
Who knows how accurate any of it really is? I think people will always find a way to cheat, no matter the process.

I have a good suggestion. America: kiss your democracy goodbye.

They accidentally lost all records of some number of votes ... I'll bet I know what sections of town were affected, too.

Actually, it sounds like a TERRIBLE idea. Why wouldn't you want paper records?! To save trees???

Even if the ballots did have an accurate paper trail, I suspect somehow it would end up with the data recorders and FAA recordings from September 11, 2001.

The very fact that there is SUCH opposition to providing any sort of accounting trail makes me *very* nervous and *very* suspicious.

Theoretically it's a very bad idea if the government or other agencies can see who you voted for, but in the case of a US election, where you have the choice of a right wing party and a slightly more right wing party, I don't think you need to worry too much.

In other countries with a much wider range of political options people should be VERY concerned about being tracked down and persecuted for voting for the 'wrong' candidate.

Most of everything you purchase comes with a receipt!
Like at the grocery store, clothing store, mechanic (some things even come with a warranty).

Why wouldn't you want proof that you voted for a particular individual, especially after the last election!

Hmmm ... the lack of privacy argument *is* something I hadn't considered.

Damned either way, it seems.

No, wait ... why couldn't the electronic version also produce a punch card that the voter could review for accuracy and then deposit in a sealed receptacle?

Audit trail ... privacy ... evrything is good!

I agree with mojo. Finally someone who gets it on this thing. Nerdy people are so wierd and they think computers can solve the worlds problems but it ISNT SO. Geez> Before we can turn around everything will be a computer. compuiter store assistants and everything. It's crazy. No kidding. And theres no way in this world i will trust them computer vote things because i know that somebody somewhere just cant wait to take away our rights andthen before we know what happened there we are. Straight into the jaws of iniqueity. Finally a good question and thank you mojo for asking it. goodbye.
