The late great Carl Sagan and many other eminent scientists have always maintained that intelligent life in the universe -if ever we were to make contact with it-will be unimaginably different physically to us humans,their argument being that environment and random genetics would dictate their evolution and by extension their physical appearance.

I agree in one sense,in a large gaseous planet in another solar system's ecosphere where life has evolved to the level of consciousness,the creatures on such a planet would for obvious reasons have adapted to their environment and would look like giant balloons or whatever,and never developing technology because of inability to manipulate their environment.

However on an earthlike planet environment would determine the outcome of any emerging species, and 'chance' mutation would be subjective and determined by what that environment would allow,so in my opinion humanoid creatures-beings very similar in appearance to you and I- would be the cutting edge of evolution on 'earthlike' planets.

I think there's aliens living in my bedroom. They're not very nice though. They ask me to kill people and, when I do, they reward me with coloured lights and music in my head.

i think there are probably all sorts of aliens and some may look very similar and others may exist in ways that our senses cannot even conceive of.

Agreed. The tenacious force we call Life seems to adapt well to whatever particular environment will even marginally support it.

And some of the stuff on earth is almost as bizarre, such as the recent discovery of marine worms that live on whale bones -- bulbous shape, roots, symbiotic bacteria, and no formal gut!

HMMM...This is suspiciously similar to a ballot i did a while ago about, well, exactly the same thing really!

Anyway, i think Aliens that look like humans in movies etc are a result of lack of imagination. Also to give the audience something to relate to so they can be frightened. An alien that was TOO different would appear ridiculous to the average audience. The truth is that Aliens most likely will look very little like us.
