IS THE US REALLY A NATION IN DANGER?

*We are a nation in danger.*

-- President George W. Bush, August 2, 2004

But ... is this *really* true?

America in 2004 is as far removed from fundamental danger as any nation in history has been. We may be scared, but aren't we, basically, fairly safe. Safe, at least, by any *reasonable historic measure*?

No other country on earth has military might even close to ours. Has such a global monopoly on armed power ever existed? Has any nation had less to fear from its neighbors and foreign armies?

Yes, the Terrorist pose a degree of threat. But, this is a degree of threat that Europe and most of the rest of the world has been dealing with for decades. You don't see them reacting as if the sky were about to fall.

Have the real threat probabilities to the US been over overhyped ... for whatever reasons? Or is the US truly a Nation in Danger?

Yes: Bush was correct -- US is a Nation in Danger

COMMENTS:
Personally, I wonder if we aren't being subjected to rank scare tactics to keep us from focusing on governmental ineptitude and corruption ... but that's just me.
by Cathexis on Fri Aug 06, 04 3:14pm [+]

No, there is a reason to be concerned but your media is scary, If I were you I would never watch the news, its all doom & gloom, Its hard to imagine why people who live in one of the most secure, wealthy countries in the world would worry so much, enjoy what you have, instead of worrying about loosing it.
by ABC on Fri Aug 06, 04 3:16pm [+]

*War* is a word that ends arguments. So is *danger*. The president has tried to sell a lot of policy by saying it was necessary because we are at war and in danger and so have the Democrats.

We don’t need to declare ourselves *A nation in danger* or *A nation at war* to carefully reform the intelligence bureaucracy, to respond to discovered plots and threats, to catch terrorists or to get other nations to help our cause.

We don't need to be a nation of crybabies or a nation that cries wolf, either.
by Cathexis on Fri Aug 06, 04 3:22pm [+]

Yep, we are.

Look at it this way, there are thousands of people willing to die so long as they can take some of us with them. That's bad enough, but combine that with the prevalence of wmds in the world today, especially with the downfall of the USSR, and that is a major threat.

I'm not saying they have stockpiles of nukes ready to go, they might get one but that's not the only thing to worry about. Bio and chemical weapons set off in a major city would be a very bad thing. Look at how much damage one guy with a little forethought was able to do in OKC.

There are looneys in every color, every country & every tax bracket.Oh Goodness lets stop the whole world!

herz: I am certainly not saying No Danger, but ... really! Orange Alert every other day? Yellow alert on *good* days? Armed militia in US streets?

Isn't this being hyped *just* a little? Especially when Bush has yet to fund First Responders (police, firefighters, EMTs) or do any real security revamping (e.g., checking cargo containers)?
by Cathexis on Fri Aug 06, 04 3:43pm [+]

herz: As an aside, before Bush, it was just dozens of people. ;-)
by Cathexis on Fri Aug 06, 04 3:44pm [+]

You can see the consequences of this idiocy at any airport, any day. The last time I flew, I had to show my driver's license, and my boarding pass, three times. This tactic handily eliminates all hijackers who have ever tried to board a plane without ID, or without bothering to buy a ticket.

The whole thing is done largely in order to create an impression of security, and the worst of it is watching your fellow passengers thanking those who pointlessly pat them down.

we are in danger economically

Anyone who stoops to using the phrase 'sand n1ggers' has lost any credibility to their argument as far as I am concerned.

No, you as individuals are not in danger. The probability of you being hit by a car, attacked by a rabid dog, being stabbed by a druggie, hit by a drunkard is so much higher than you being done by a terrorist that it is not even worth thinking about. But you can't solve these problems by grand-gesture-policies so the government are reluctant to spend actual work time dealing with these very real problems. They are in the business for their own egos so don't want to spend time on non-headline-making policies. Also, the terrorist is represented in the form of that legendary foe of USA-'johnny foreigner'. For a nation that is constantly being told, and believes that they are the greatest in the world it becomes easier to believe that a threat from 'outside' rather than from the 'inside'is more credible and dangerous. This paranoia is not so prevalent in other countries such as France and Italy because they are aware that their own country is not perfect-they have been around long enough to become cynical of government, and rightly so. Therefore it is easier for them to look outwards with admiration, unlike the Americans for whom it is harder since they believe they are number1. I think the USA contributes a lot to the world but we must remember that their population and institutions are still babies compared to the rest of us. They WILL learn but we must be patient with them and hope they do not destroy the world before they do. Getting rid of Bush would help this. The man is a reactionary fool who is being used by all around him.

I see again how a couple of prize idiots on this thread believe politicians hollering down a microphone over the actual FBI field agents investigations into all these matters.
You have a toilet that is overflowing with Shit and the plumber thinks its tree roots getting into the pipe but the Gov says , NOOO , OSAMA" and you fuckheads believe it because it suits your warped flagpole up the ass world view

Anonysmous: My opinion is not sacrosanct. My intent is to open discussion.

Yes, I have opinions. But many times, through discussion, other insights may cause me to re-evaluate my original stance.

My intent is not to browbeat dissent, but to encourage debate and discussion. I figure Truth Will Out .. not matter what any of us may have originally believed.
by Cathexis on Sat Aug 07, 04 2:38pm [+]

Yes America is a nation in danger.Although the Bush administration may have over hyped the amount of danger the U.S is in,we are still in danger. It does not matter how powerful our military is,the all powerful American military was unable to prevent the deaths of 3000 Americans on 9/11.Could you imagine how many lives would be lost if terrorist got their hands on a nuclear weapon? Also it is true that Europe and the rest of the world has been dealing with terrorist organizations for decades. But none of the European nation have ever dealt with a terrorist organization like Al Qaeda.Bin The level of sophistication that goes into their attacks has never been seen by a terrorist group before.
by Corrupt on Sat Aug 07, 04 8:36pm [+]

I mean the level of sophistication that goes into an Al Qaeda attack has never been achieved by other terrorist groups.
by Corrupt on Sat Aug 07, 04 8:44pm [+]

I believe we definitly need to be concerned, is there an attack immenant, we won't know unless it happens.
