WHEN DOES PATRIOTISM GO BAD?

[+] ballot by Applerod
created Sat Aug 07, 04

When does the love for one's country begin to supercede the best interests of that country? If you had to identify one major point, which would it be?

When it becomes fanatical
When 1/3 or more of the population opposes its direction
When it excludes rational thought in favor of emotion
When it cannot be questioned
When it turns to Nationalism.
When it's leadership is flawed & fails
Never
When flags are inexpensive

COMMENTS:
I do not understand/agree with the person who added: 'When it's leadership is flawed and fails'

Patriotism is a feeling, or an attitude, not a group of people.
by Applerod on Sat Aug 07, 04 2:23am [+]

When it uses other nations and/or peoples as an excuse for their own failings.

See Germany 1933 - 1945

When it's used as an excuse to deny others their Constitutional Rights.

Example: The Patriot Act.

When you're homosexual like me and have no pride, only the love of cock!
by xxxxxxxx on Sat Aug 07, 04 11:05am [+]

I think its when you start insulting other nations and tell them they are inferior to your own and refuse to listen to other cultures abd learn from them.
by vanman1970 on Sat Aug 07, 04 11:25am [+]

patriotism is a base, feeling for simple people. it is safe only until people start to use this feeling to persuade people that their actions should be affected by their pride in the love of their country.

How far left was Germany in 1933 - 45?

When it is confused with Nationalism. They aren't the same, but when too many don't realize this, bad times are ahead.
by Cathexis on Sat Aug 07, 04 3:02pm [+]

"Patriotism: a loyalty to the principals that ones nation founded on.
Nationalism: a loyalty to a particular government."
-Chris Snyder, Cosby, Tennessee
When the person chooses to blindly follow a government in power and does not step back and judge how this fits in with the principles of that nation. Thats when patriotism gives way to nationalism. And that is when it goes wrong.

When its England, there's no need to stop being patriotic.. TIME 2 RECLAIM OUR COUNTRY!!!
by rule_brittania on Fri Sep 03, 04 4:15pm [+]

Reclaim England? Exactly who should reclaim it?
by Steelhamster on Sun Sep 05, 04 8:29pm [+]

I think he means to reclaim it from the multiculturalists and Muslims.
by MrTroche on Tue Sep 07, 04 9:38am [+]

So that means eveyone who isnt 'English'should be deported... thats almost everyone except the Picts and the Celts. It would be a pretty quiet place.
by Steelhamster on Tue Sep 07, 04 12:19pm [+]

That means that everyone who isn't culturally British should be deported.
by MrTroche on Tue Sep 07, 04 1:11pm [+]

Good to see how you move the goalposts when it suits you, lol.

Whatis your definition of 'culturally' British?
by Steelhamster on Thu Sep 16, 04 5:07pm [+]

Perhaps you should claim an education first and learn how to read and write.

Einstein has a good quote on patriotism.....cant quite remember it.....
by straits_dylan on Wed Jan 19, 05 7:21am [+]

Well now I read it, it is only vaguely about patriotism.

"He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despiceable an ignoreable war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action. It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder"
