SHOULD GEORGE W. BUSH HAVE READ HIS FATHER'S VIEWS ON IRAQ IN HIS MEMOIR, A WORLD TRANSFORMED?

[+] serious ballot by mojo
created Sun Aug 08, 04

In his book the senior Bush wrote this passage about Iraq: "Trying to eliminate Saddam...would have incurred incalculable human and political costs. Apprehending him was probably impossible.... We would have been forced to occupy Baghdad and, in effect, rule Iraq.... There was no viable 'exit strategy' we could see, violating another of our principles. Furthermore, we had been consciously trying to set a pattern for handling aggression in the post-Cold War world. Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally exceeding the United Nations' mandate, would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression that we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the United States could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land."

Dubya has stated that he doesn't read the newspaper. Perhaps he didn't read his Poppy's book either. Do you think it might have given him pause?

(Please excuse me if this is a repeat ballot - I did a search and couldn't find it.)

Yes, it might have changed the outcome of events.
No, he probably doesn't read or listen to his dad's advice.
No, this war is essential to keeping world peace.
Dubya is too stupid to understand it

COMMENTS:
You make an excellent point Mojo.

I dont believe it was Dubyas idea really, the hawks in Washington and the special interests were itching for a fight and just had to manipulate Dubya in the right way, 9/11 helped immensely.

Great ballot, mojo. Hits the nail on the head. If we had a President who could think, we'd be in a lot less crap right now.

I believe that the Senior Bush supported his son's decision to pursue/capture Saddam. The idea he would read a book regarding this matter only proves that he understood quite well the risk/cost. However, his/Jr.'s arrogants/personal dislike for Saddam prevented the pursue/capture. Yes, in principle, theory and deductive reasoning, the cost would/has been enormous. However, Remember, 911 could not go unanswered, eventhough I personally do not believe that Saddam take part in that despicable act of mass murder. I will admit that Bush Senior due to his incredible intellect (however, greatly insensitive to the social needs of millions)he is correct in his assessment regarding this matter, eventhough, he made his relationship with Saddam personal, causing many Americans and others to die on his pathethic son's watch.

Corrections: Write a book, not read a book.

Corrections: However, his and Jr's arrogance and personal dislike for Saddam is the primary reason for the pursue and capture.

Correction: Eventhough I personally do not believe that Saddam took part
in that despicable act of mass murder.

George Bush read a book? He can barely talk!

Good point!

Although it is rumoured that W has ... issues ... with his father. Even if he got someone to read it to him, Im not sure it would have had more sway than the NeoCons who currently pull the strings.

It's almost as if Daddy Bush wrote the book to show up Dubya's stupidity when he finally invaded.
