After the oil refineries in Nazi-occupied Ploesti, Rumania were bombed out of action in 1943, German scientists developed a process for converting lignite (a form of coal) into gasoline which kept their Luftwaffe in the air and their ground vehicles going right up to V-E day. That very same German coal-to-gasoline process is presently used in South Africa. The USA has enough coal reserves to last at least 200 years which, when responsibly used can put a sorely-needed end our dependence on all foreign oil once and for all. However, if the oil companies allowed that German process to be implemented, they would go broke thus breaking their stranglehold on the overall world economy which they have maintained for at least 100 years. Pro-oil-company politics are also the big issue here which are impossible to get past.
