DOES GOD EVOLVE?

[+] serious ballot by Cathexis
created Mon Aug 16, 04

Admittedly, this question occurs from my Cathloic background, but ... comparing the God of the Old Testament (wrathful, rigid, arbitrary, smiting) with the God of the New Testament (merciful, loving, etc.) it seems to me that either these are two different entities being referred to or that God is changing ... evolving ... over time.

Assuming, for the premise of this ballot, that a God exists ... do you believe God evolves? Is so, what does this say about God already being "perfect?" Or is God unchanging ... not capable of learning/ evolving? ould this mena that no experience or interaction could affect Him?

God can change
God is incapable of change
Other (comment)
no, he doesnt exist
God can change, but he'd rather we did
God is perfect. Change only occurs in the universe
Homo Sapiens definition of "God" changes
GOD has evolved, is now SuperIntelligence!!

COMMENTS:
I always imagined that if there were a god, it would change and evolve into higher levels and that our next level would be much like a level of our own god, etc...

No the religion evolves, it has to or it will go broke. If God had anything to do with the bible, why would he change it.

Wow, even with a premise of god's existence, it doesn't exist... it must *really* not exist... ;)

No, I do don't think God ever has to evolve,... but we definitely do.

He or it is both the irresistable force and the immovable object rolled into one, then add omniscience, omnipotence and omnipresence and we have something approaching a description of the Godhead, agnostics like myself see that all these qualities already exist -and are possessed by- the observable universe that our little speck of a planet floats in.

Good question and observation.

The Bible says that God does not change, that does not mean His relation to us must remain static. He has always been a God of Justice, Righteousness, Judgement, Wrath, etc. These characteristics stand out in the OT, but they are not the only characteristics portrayed.

Consider God's relation to Lot and Noah. He certainly saved them (type of Salvation).

Consider God's relation to Daniel, Joseph, and Job. Also types demonstrating God's love and reward for faithfulness.

Moving to the NT, we see more of God's love openly. But we also learn that He will judge all the world and will cast many into Hell, etc.
So, we see He is still all of the things above, but He is also about Love, Patience, Long Suffering, etc.

I think the huge change is also a demonstration of the way He is different things to each of us depending what we need. Father, Comforter, Savior, etc.

Well put, I agree. But I believe He (or She or It) has divine patience and abundant love with which to put up with all of us little sinning ants as we continually fall on our faces. The God as described in the Old and New Testaments is a very different sounding entity in each, but He must be far more loving than wrathful, otherwise we'd all be smoke by now.

God's love is constant, universal, transcendent, oceanic. I think the reason He appears to change is because of the flawed humans that scribbled out the Bible.

No I don't think god evolves, I think humans do, and therefore their perception of god, who may or may not actually exist. I too was raised a Catholic, and though sometimes I fear that everything I was taught is true and I have rejected it - I also just can't accept the story as told. There has got to be more going on and it is presumptuous and arrogant to assume that we know exactly what it is. So either I'm going to burn in hell, or there truly is a merciful god who will understand and forgive me. :)
