COMMENTS:
Althouigh you have to like Paul Morphy!
And Bruce Pandalfini, while not famous on the circuit, is definitely one of the better teachers of chess theory and practice.
me. I challenge any of you to an online game.
Karpov? You've gotta be kidding! How many times did Kasparov outplay him to win the world title?
Morphy was of his time,he wouldn't hack it in the cutthroat world of modern day chess.
I haven't played in a long time Doc,but I wouldn't mind playing you - even if I am a bit stale mate.
Doctordraw: You're on! I've never played online, but it sounds like fun. :)

Yeah, but I like Karpov's style. ;-)
DD: Oh *really*?!? What is your FIDE rating? I'm 1904, USCF.
30000 D.I.L.D.O rating. I.M.L.Y.I.N.G That beats your I believe?
In 1972, Bobby Fischer defeated not only Boris Spassky, but the entire Russian chess community who were helping Spassky on every move in the tournament.
Damn! Who knew DD had such a high rating! ;-)
If most of the world's great chess had had the limited chess instruction and coaching that Fischer had, they would have become bookkeepers or computer programmers at best. Bobby Fischer was completely self-taught. What he accomplished is comparable to some guy in Bolivia or Ethiopia or some place like that working out of his house and not only building his own satellite, but dominating the satellite industry - all on his own. No one comes close to Fischer.
I meant "...great chess players..."
Bostonian: Except for the Japanese police, with extradition papers. ;-)
on his day Tal was unbeatable although he too had mental problems - also what about Capablanca
Ken_from_Dublin, you don't know anything about Karpov and Kasparov. I wouldn't say that Kasparov outplayed him too easily. Karpov has competed in the chess tournaments more than any other player. Besides, Fischer knew that he would lose to Karpov and didn't play against him. As for the best player, Alechine, who beat Capablanka, could play on 25 boards without even looking on them being in another room.
