SHOULD COLUMBUS DAY BE ABOLISHED AS A NATIONAL HOLIDAY?

[+] ballot by Kuntha
created Tue Nov 11, 03

Many people hail Columbus for his discovery because from it evolved modern civilization and the United States, with its glorious past of liberty, equality and the invention of microwave ovens. In reality, We celebrate a day dedicated to a man who encouraged racism and oppression and who committed the worst atrocity that can ever befall mankind — genocide. A Short Account Of The Destruction Of the Indies, Bartolome de Las Casas describes the slaughter:

[The Spaniards] forced their way into native settlements, slaughtering everyone they found there, including small children, old men, pregnant women, and even women who had just given birth. They hacked them to pieces, slicing open their bellies with their swords... They even laid wagers on whether they could manage to slice a man in two at a stroke... they grabbed suckling infants by the feet... and dashed them headlong against the rocks.

The way they normally dealt with the native leaders and nobles was to tie them to a kind of griddle...and then grill them over a slow fire, with the result that they howled in agony and despair as they died a lingering death. !!! The United States should abolish Columbus Day. It is a symbol of ignorance. It is a symbol of racism. And, it is a symbol of Native American genocide. To me, celebrating Columbus Day is like celebrating "Hitler Day." Some might argue that Hitler did great things for Germany despite the killings and atrocities he committed. And for other reasons, some might believe that Columbus himself was a great man. I think the day should be abolished because of the racism, oppression and genocide that it stands for. We should be proud of the United States and all that it stands for. But we should not cover up the mistakes it took to get here. Celebrating Columbus Day does just that. It glorifies the good and covers up the bad.

Yes, it should be a abolished
No, it should not offent the indians
It should be celebrated but not in the name of Columbus.
No. It's a paid Holiday For Gov't Workers
no its the only white man holiday.
NO MLK Day should be Abolished!
Why is there no Childrens Day?
Should be changed to Columbo Day instead
Accept it! Spain made it a permanent home as is.
should be changed to Earth-is-Round Day

No ML King Day should be abolished. He didn't do anything for his country. Only for his people.
by grapost on Tue Nov 11, 03 7:33am [+]

I think they should both be abolished, along with christmas, easter and any other religious holidays.... damn lazy americans :)
by lcd on Tue Nov 11, 03 9:03am [+]

but to be fair, grapost, as far as I know, MLK never slaughtered anyone (although he got slaughtered). You can also say that Columbus never did anything for native americans, blacks and aisians.
by lcd on Tue Nov 11, 03 9:06am [+]

Columbus didn't slaughter anyone either. Why are you holding him responsible for the misdeeds of the Spanish regime?
by grapost on Tue Nov 11, 03 1:21pm [+]

Because it's a constant reminder to the native people that we simply dont care about what happened to them, infact we are gald it happened the way it did. History should not be forgotten. It's not about who did something for this country and who didnt, it's about morals and drawing a line between right and wrong. If it werent for Columbus, this would have never happened. It might have happened later on but it wouldnt have been linked to Columbus.

Cunta. When are you going to start living in the present. All you do is whine about events that occured hundreds of years ago. You keep crying over spilt milk. Get over it will ya! Your constantly living in the past. It prevents you from moving forward. Get your head out of your ass and look around some time!
by Grapost on Tue Nov 11, 03 6:57pm [+]

Heh, your the only person in the world that claimes, MLK was a terrorist? Who did he terrorise, who did he kill? and why was he a communist??? because he cared for the welfare of the common man? Hah. You just lie out of your ass. You people hate him because he defied the odds and made a mockory out of your beliefes, that black people werent capable of becoming organized and standing up for themselves. Pathetic!

Do they still teach at American schools that it was Columbus who found America. Many people visited America before him. Leif Eriksom was already mentioned, also some Muslim explorers were there before Columbus. Besides, the continent was already inhabited so how could he have found it?

MLK Day should be abolished- thats a holiday for a cheater and communist! Too find out the truth on this thing Martin Luther King please go to- www.martinlutherking. org. If King was such a great man why did a liberal judge seal his FBI record until the year 2017?

Our schools teach so many lies it's ridiculous. They still teach that the pilgrims made friends with the Indians. Yeah, OK, whatever.
by nuckinfutz on Thu Jan 22, 04 1:17pm [+]

Columbus *was* involved in slaughter and he *was* a slaver.
MLK wasn't the angel he is made out to be, but at least his message was one of love and peace. He helped black and white Americans get along. If that isn't doing something for your country, I don't know what is.
by SomeGuy on Wed Feb 18, 04 12:11pm [+]

Who celebrates Columbus Day anymore except maybe... the Knights of Columbus (bunch of right-wing Cathonazis, them and Opus Dei both suck turds).

By the way, St. Brendan, the Irish monk, "discovered" America before even Leif Erikson. And the Egyptians might've reached South or Central America before them. It is also possible that the Greek myth of Atlantis could've been about a sunken land in the Caribbean (but a lot of that comes from the occult speculation of Edgar Cayce and others).

Columbus actually discovered the Caribbean islands on October 12, 1493 and stayed with the natives until January 1493. He asked several natives to accompany him to Spain as a proof to King Ferninand and Queen Isabella. He had left behind 40 Spaniards (all men) on the island to help out the natives. When Columbus returned to the same island in mid 1493 with Western Hemisphere's first horses, all his men were killed. He released the natives and went elsewhere. It wasn't until the Spanish conquistadors who first set foot on mainland Americas and made it an permanent settlement as New Spain. The Spaniards brought many technologies or animals: horses, cattles, flour, armour, cannons, laws, engineering and Christianity. The Spaniards also started the first European civilization in the Americas in 1519 and became the Western world it is today. Spain was at its great reign during that period and owned nearly half of the world.
It's true that Leif Ericson sailed the Western Hemisphere and called the land in Vinland around southeastern Canada. He didn't explore the land, but sailed around and didn't establish a permanent settlement.
So, I say Columbus's actual name is Cristobal Colon and in honor of Spain, the America's first Europeans and permanent residents! Viva Espana!

NO! Any attempts to abolish it is just a bunch of do-gooder liberal hippy nonesense. I want to keep my day off thank you.
by Lucky on Tue May 04, 04 3:24am [+]

As far as I am concerned, Columbus Day should be abolished if Christopher Columbus directly participated in tha genocide.
by CriminalMinded on Sat May 29, 04 2:07pm [+]

The more holidays the better. I suggest renaming Columbus Day to Laziness Day.
by zorra on Wed Jun 16, 04 6:58pm [+]

Hell no! He brought civilization to the Western Hemisphere-thank you, Spain.
by FieryEyed_GrimReaper on Wed Jul 28, 04 1:52am [+]

The Spanish brought civilization to the Americas? Who knew? Guess the Mayan, Aztec, and Incan empires weren't civilizations after all.
