"PURPLE HEART" BANDAGES AT RNC

[+] ballot by Cathexis
created Wed Sep 01, 04

Seems some people at the Republican National Convention have been sporting little bandages with purple hearts on them.

Is this good-natured spoofing? Or an act in poor taste and disrespectful of Veterans?

Good political commentary
Disrespectful and/or petty

What would Republicans have said if people did something similar at the DNC?!?

Yeah, like wearing little coke spoons around their necks...
by mojo on Wed Sep 01, 04 2:07pm [+]

I like the street theater group that calls themselves "Billionaires for Bush" They dress up in tuxedos, tophats and ball gowns and show up at GOP events mocking the president's ties to big money. When speaking to the media, they all use joke names like "Rolin N. Doe", "Harris Tocracy", "Ari N. Nation" or "Rob Moore".

I'm a member and my registered name is "Drew Peacock".

disrespect for sure

You know ... whether their issues are right or wrong, I am seeing a major double standard in what they view as acceptable behaviour.
by Cathexis on Wed Sep 01, 04 2:12pm [+]

They make me sick.

I wasn't aware of this until I read your post, Cathexis, because I am avoiding watching the RNC like the plague (mental health reasons). My husband had heard about this, but didn't want to mention it to me. Whenever I think I've heard the lowest from these people, they up and surprise me with something lower.
by mojo on Wed Sep 01, 04 2:26pm [+]

If this had happened at DNC, what would the GOP response have been?

Perhaps something along what one viewer commented: For those who have never seen the business end of a rifle or RPG or other weapon of personal destruction it might be cute. But to those of use who have been there on the ground, in helicopters, in swift boats, in Jets over Hanoi, the Purple Heart is the one medal you don't want, but cherish if you get it. It is not cute.

Carrying shrapnel in your body for 30 years is not cute. It is disgusting to see all those people (I'm willing to bet that 99 per cent have not a clue about service to their country) wandering around thinking they are funny, desecrating the sacrifices that any man or woman who has gone to war has made. And worse yet, desecrating the medal that represents the horrible reality of any war and many times the ultimate sacrifice (along with the notification that your son, daughter, husband, wife, mother is dead you also get a Purple Heart *with the thanks of a GRATEFUL nation*).
by Cathexis on Wed Sep 01, 04 2:29pm [+]

Thank you for saying that so eloquently, Cathexis. My father has two purple hearts, both for shrapnel wounds. When he was shot down the first time, he was bleeding so profusely that he had to land the plane with his head between his knees to avoid passing out.
by mojo on Wed Sep 01, 04 2:38pm [+]

I think they should serve Hot Bush Faced pretzels at the DNC
by cracked_bulb on Wed Sep 01, 04 2:42pm [+]

to all those who are serving overseas... remember that's what republicans think of you. when you get injured fighting to get them that oil money, they will redicule you even though they sat at home profitting off your service. think about that when you are voting this year.

A thousand AMENS!
by Barbara_Baby_Cakes on Wed Sep 01, 04 3:15pm [+]

those demonstrators should have a mass choking.. about a hundred of them lined up in front of the cameras, taking a bite out of a pretzel, then promptly choking and falling over.
by LCD on Wed Sep 01, 04 3:16pm [+]

...and chant "Four More Wars! Four More Wars!"
by Stewie on Wed Sep 01, 04 3:38pm [+]

A deal right off the BOTTOM of the deck. And some Republicans wonder WHY they're BASHED...
by Truthseeker013 on Wed Sep 01, 04 3:47pm [+]

Not cool, whether you believe John Kerry deserved his medals or not, I consider this act despicable. The convention attendees displaying these bandages are not only mocking those who have served previously, they are also mocking those who currently serve. If I'm running the show @ the RNC, these jerks either take off the bandage or they don't come in, period.
by lowerclassbrats on Wed Sep 01, 04 3:59pm [+]

To clear things up a bit I am not against questioning the validity of John Kerry's medals, I just believe this is gutter politics.
by lowerclassbrats on Wed Sep 01, 04 4:01pm [+]

lcb: I respect that stand. This isn't a Bush/Kerry issue, IMO. I'd like to think Bush would be just as put off.
by Cathexis on Wed Sep 01, 04 4:03pm [+]

Oh shit -- everyone's comments on here I have to completely agree with. That's terribly disrespectful to do that (the Purple Heart bandages), and the GOP gets what they deserve as punishment for that.
by Counciltucky on Wed Sep 01, 04 4:07pm [+]

I'm with lcb on this one.
by herzog on Wed Sep 01, 04 6:52pm [+]

A soldier will do his duty, no matter which party holds an office.

The soldier may have personal political beliefs, but will follow the chain of command right up to the top.

How disheartening it must be to be fighting a war, that your commander in chief ordered you too, only to find that you efforts are ridiculed by those who sent you.

Shameful.
by Steelhamster on Wed Sep 01, 04 9:40pm [+]

The RNC is ruthless... the only way for Kerry to win is to be more ruthless.
by CouchGnome on Thu Sep 02, 04 1:56am [+]

What's Kerry going to do? Blow up the RNC?
by cretin_slap on Thu Sep 02, 04 9:32am [+]

Unfortunately, I am at a crossroads with my thoughts as to who is the better candidate, in light of that, the only choice that I would make, if I had the opportunity, would be to stay with the devil that you know, but the band aid fiasco is just sad, I do not for a second believe that it was endorsed by the RNC, definitilt not by Bush, after all Bush senior has a great war record and is proud of it, as he should be.
by Bafkoof on Thu Sep 02, 04 1:29pm [+]

No, as much as I dislike Bush, I don't for a minute believe that he endorsed this.
by Cathexis on Thu Sep 02, 04 2:49pm [+]

They're all the rage this summer
by Dani_dysfunk on Wed Sep 29, 04 5:50pm [+]

Bush should have received a Purple Heart. He sprained his brain in the Texas Air National Guard.
