It's been downhill all the way since the Renaissance.
She made it sound like all was right in the world and only problem they had was where to buy a hula hoop

Life was probably easier partly because they were less aware of the troubles in the world. Ignorance is bliss.
Wow, your GRANDparents were baby boomers. You must be very young. Baby boomers span from 1946-1964, wow! I think life has always been awful in one way or another, but you tend to think of the 'olden days' as more innocent. When I think of the 80s I feel that way. It has a lot to do with having been very young at whatever time you are reminiscing about. Rose-colored glasses and all that. My theory anyway!

I think the relative standard of living was better for Americans back then. The welfare state has eroded our freedoms since then.
When I look back over time, it seems like it was usually when things were hard that end up to be the good old days. I truly believe a family that can't afford a television will come together and create fun things that end up being closer and happier in a sense. My Dad talks about the good old days alot and he grew up real poor.

She misses a life where she was in good physical condition, family and friends were still alive and close and the world was easier for her to understand. None of the old days were as good as we remember them to be. :)
People naturally believe that the "old days" were better than the ones we live in now, whether that is the 50's, 40's, 20's, etc. Plus, for middle class white men it wasn't that bad
I see what you mean, USMC. I think it was. Me and my girlfriend were watching Grease the other day and we decided that it would have been great to be at Highschool in America at around that time. A time before the monsters started running amock. I could give up the internet, games consoles, and all that other shit as quick as a flash to live in a proper community where they still had families that all ate dinner together. Our generation gets to watch the humiliating collapse of everything that your Gran holds dear.
Well said, Cretin_Slap.

Compared to the problems mentioned and ones not mentioned, the world we live in is terrible how? I'd say they had it worse than we do.
You know, I've usually had a few drinks before I start thinking this way but here goes cold turkey... I don't think it's better or worse. With new inventions and medications to help prolong life and make it more tolerable, we add in new dangers. Medications to help save our unborn babies cause birth defects, faster modes of transportation lead to more fatalities, advancement in weapons lead to more mass deaths, etc. It just seems to me that all the suffering comes right along with the advancements so in some ways it is much better but in others, although we feel we've made huge advancements, we haven't. It's just all shifted and continues the circle.
neonblak, I did not say they were worse now, I just said terrible today, and you have to agree events around the world are in a sorry state.
