COMMENTS:
It should be enough, because he acknowledged his share of the responsibility. But then there's the idiot who knowingly gave them false documents who we know won't get as much heat as CBS and Rather.
What a half ass apology it was. He needs to apologize to president Bush.
cBS acknowledges the document came from an anti-Bush dunce who faxed it to them from a nearby Kinko's, but they also have reported the dunce is not the original source of the fraudulent documents. cBS has not revealed the original source of the slanderous mockuments, could they be protecting John Ke..., no never mind it's unfathomable.
What is frightening is that someone or some group, along with a willingly negligent CBS attempted to shape the election through manipulation of the media. I think many of us are old enough to know the media has a bias. After the election of JFK some moguls boasted the American public no longer elects presidents, but the media does. They certainly have an inordinate amount of influence, but this appears a greater abuse of that power entrusted to them. In short, it smacks of an attempt at fraud. To use a childish term, it seems there are cheaters among us. Is CBS culpable? Only in as much as they were willingly negligent. By that, I mean they obviously did not do their due diligence, probably in part because they were afraid of what they might find. It is often easier to ask forgiveness instead of permission. Has CBS lost its credibility? Unfortunately, I think not. I say unfortunately, not because I wish CBS any ill-will, but because I think the American people are already divided into two camps and no amount of facts will sway the majority of people in either direction. For those who are Anti-Kerry, they will shout how CBS lost credibility, though they never found CBS credible in the first place. As for the Kerry camp, they will overlook the facts to find some palatable story buried deep within.
I think that Dan Rather apologizing for trying to derail Bush is disgusting. He did not owe Bush an apology...he simply did it because the RepubliKKKan party bosses probably threatened him unless he did it...FUCK BUSH FUCK HIM RIGHT IN THE EAR!!!
I wish Bush would even offer such a "half-assed apology" to the American people for sending their finest to fight and die in a bogus war.

No. An apology is a necessary acknowledgment, but it will not undo the damage to reputation. Failing to substantiate one's material beyond a certain point is a serious matter in journalism. This is not something from which CBS will recover quickly.
I agree. It might be time for Rather, like Brokaw, to step down anyway. I don't mean to sound frivolous, but I would start watching CBS again if I could gaze upon John Roberts's handsome face every night instead :-)

What is BS is that there was any kind of apology..wveryone knows Bush hid in the Guard, and then didnt even bother to serve out his time. No apology warranted. I have to wonder how much his campaign team paid the network to put the repuke-ican spin on things.
Yeah, it was Rather and his teams job to verify the source. Also he owes George Bush an apology.
This will be a honking big mess that will stain the Tiffany Network for a long time to come. Dan might as well announce his retirement NOW.
This comment is a fake. Get it now Cathexis? Get it now?
Wellllllll, Cathexis, sound a little familiar! I don't like to say I told you so, but 'I told you so! I don't mind drive up windows, I can smell the food already. Did we put a limit on what we could order!!??
