When a huge amount of methane is released from the ocean floor, under a ship, the surrounding water effectively loses its density and the ship loses buoyancy, effectively sinking it!
Don't know the effect on planes, but I suspect it may have similar unsettling effects -- especially if unidentified.
What you said, I have heard of. Methane is lighter than oxygen, so if enough methane goes under the airplane it will bring it down. Or, if enough methane gets into the engine it will take away oxygen from the engine causing the plane to stall. I saw a documentary on it, they said that only 2 percent of the air around the plane should be methane to effect it.

Odd magnetics in the area. It's been measured. There haven't been as many disappearences of late because GPS equipment is better.
i know about the methane but what happens to all of the planes? You just never see them again? I think it is interesting and would love to check it out myself.
