What about Earthquakes? Tsunamis? Heat waves? etc..

Because they're speshul
Because God plays favorites
They do! we recently had an Ernie Earthquake.
Heatwave Horace
We name them because they are cyclic and expected.

No, I don't care if heat waves aren't considered a natural disaster, ok!?

It seems like I've sparked a wave of Natural Disaster ballots.

It seems that the deadliest hurricanes have the stupidest names. Well, you can't blame some of them for being pissed off about their names!

Earthquakes are usually just named for the location of the epicenter
or ground zero or whatever the hell you want to call it.

It does beg the question though, Why do they give Hurricanes cute names?

What's the point?

Some names make the 'canes sound less threatning. Try to imagine how seriously you'd take it if Hurricane Mary-Lou was headed your way.

Ivan isn't a cute name.

Voted : We name them because they are cyclic and expected.
They are named because they are cyclic. In a short time we can use up lots of names and have fun picking out new ones. The cyclic and expected nature of hurricanes makes them well-known but unwanted guests.
