IS OBESITY A VALID REASON FOR SOMEONE TO BE CONSIDERED 'HANDICAPPED'?

Obesity is preventable, it is not a disease, it is not a horrible affliction like diabetes or MS or Lou Gehrigs, etc.

Why then do fat people believe that, based on their inability to control their eating habits, they should be considered as 'handicapped' and given special priviledges as such?

Isn't this ridiculous? Do you agree that a preventable condition should be considered a handicapped?

Are fat people actually handicapped?

Yes, it is a handicap
No, it is NOT a handicap

COMMENTS:
I do not believe people should receive disability checks simply due to obesity but I do believe that weight loss surgery should be accepted by the insurance companies.

There are several sub-questions in here ...

1: Is it a handicap?

A: If a handicap is any condition that prevents or inhibits normal life, then the answer is clearly: Yes.

2: Should they be given special privileges?

A: For me, I suppose it depends upon what we're talking about when we say Special privileges. I wasn't aware they were getting any.

3: Because the condition is preventable by the individual, does this affect #2?

A: I'd say: Be careful about generalizations. Yes, the majority of obesity (especially in the US) is probably preventable and/or due to lifestyle. But cavalierly lumping all such afflicted into this category is a dismissive generalization.

Any Special Treatment should involve a consideration as to the nature, cause, and reversability of the condition. If reversable, the focus should be on reversing.

Interim accommodations ... well, that depends on the nature of what is being considered.

I have a handicap plate on my car because my wife has MS, she rarely parks there thinking those spots are for those who are worst off.
