COMMENTS:
Under what zodiac sign was Bush born? I always thought that a charismatic lider must have the same zodiac sign as his people. Look at Hitler: he was a taurus. The descripton of this sign perfectly works for the germans. I know this is bullshit.
'I ask this because I sense that George W. Bush doesn't have much empathy. He seems to have reached his stage in life without health or money problems. His family seems long-lived, prosperous and healthy too.' Here he stands in stark contrast to kerry who . . . nevermind. No empathy is not necessary. They can feel however they want about a particular piece of legislature, but they should support or oppose it based on cold hard logic. I don't want mother thereasa to run this country, I want a leader who is willing to do what is necessary.
As usual, herzog, you have misinterpreted the question and resorted to exaggeration and over-simplification. Empathy does not equal "Mother Theresa". Perhpas a better word would have been "maturity" because, as a general rule, empathy develops as a person matures - with any luck.

hieros_games, I don't follow zodiac signs, but Bush's birthday is July 26. I don't know what that makes him. A Feces? ***KIDDING***

Yes... I think empathy is a quality that all should possess... and especially those who are in positions of empowerment over such a diverse group of people.

herzog has also fallen victim to another common logic fallacy: That having one characteristic excludes the other. The ballot question never asserted the president had to use empathy, as a sole resource, in order to make decisions. It asked if possessing the quality was necessary. My interpretation: Decisions based on logic, but with empathy as an additional resource and adding appropriate input. Yet again, I remind you, herzog: Bush is wrong -- the world is not made up of simplistic binary choices and dualities.
PS: In light of your assertion that decisions should be based on logic (which implies based on actual reality and facts), may I assume you will *not* be casting a vote for George W Bush, this November? ;-)
I don't see HOW you can manage to lead anything bigger than a pop stand without a little empathy. Maybe that's what Mister Bush needs, as cruel as it may sound, to have a good load of pain and suffering in his life.
