JOURNALISM: ON LIES AND BALANCE

[+] serious ballot by Cathexis
created Mon Oct 11, 04

Mark Halperin, at ABC broadcasting, wrote a memo declaring that the news network should not treat misstatements and lies from both sides as equivalent if they are not. That is, when reporters cover (what turn out to be) lies from one side, they don't have to struggle to find an offsetting lie from the other side in order to achieve some artificial 'balance.'

Are you in favor of this policy? Should it be extended to all journalism?

Yes
No

COMMENTS:
Reporting the Truth instead of trying to maintain an artificial balance ... what a concept.

Almost makes one think that journalism has a purpose to inform, rather than act as a sound byte conduit!

What a novel idea. Instead of two wrongs making a right, make one wrong wrong by matching it with a right. Why didn't someone think of that earlier? It would allow for the ACTUAL FACTS to get into circulation, for a REAL DIALOGUE to begin on the ISSUES- I think I just answered my own question...
