COMMENTS:
Thing is, Preparation_H, whites have hijacked black music time and time again over the years. Jazz, blues, rock'n'roll, electronica, rap and many sub-genres were 'invented' (or 'discovered' as I prefer to think of it, as an admittedly somewhat pretentious musician) and developed by black people but the recording companies and promotional tools were white-oriented. Consequently, so were most of the superstars of the genres (certainly in all of the above genres except jazz). Think Elvis Presley and Eminem as the prime examples. MOBO merely reclaims some of the credit for musical innovations for the black community. If there were a MOWO award, it would between the likes of Beethoven, Tchaikowsky, Mozart and Ravel. And, er, Emerson Lake and Palmer. The fact is, the majority of modern popular music is of black origin and it is a very sad consequence of a huge history of racism that the MOBO awards have to exist at all. Just out of interest, knowing you're a fellow Brit. Do you know who The Beatles, generally acclaimed as our greatest ever pop group (arguably, the world's greatest) cite as their major influences? They originally came together because of a shared love of the music of Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Er... they're black!
Well said, keithsheen!
How come everything that supports a once oppressed race HAS to be racist with no questions asked?
I dont personally think they are racist, but I think its a bit stupid that fact that whites cannot have similar things or they'd be beaten down as racist
Thanks for all the good karma Preparation H and no it isn't racist.
I don't see why us black people can't have anything like this without these type of questions being asked either Cherri.
MOBO is the KKK of music.
How can this not be "racist?" Any time someone is included or excluded based upon race, it is simply "racism." But you knew that...So, what's the question?
