WAS MOTHER TERESA A LIVING SAINT, OR A SELF-SERVING MONEY-GRUBBING PUBLICITY WHORE WHOSE SAINTLY IMAGE WAS MANUFACTURED BY THE CHURCH'S P.R. CAMPAIGN?

The Catholic Church has always needed saints, as a recruiting and fund-raising tool. And it needs them more desperately than ever with its current bankruptcies and scandals. That's why the Church has accelerated its saint-manufacturing procedure to now accomodate one Mother Teresa.
Teresa raised perhaps a few hundred million dollars, ostensibly for the cause of helping the poor. Nobody knows how much money she raised, because she never allowed any audit of it[for obvious reasons]. What IS well known is that virtually none of that money went to the poor - while untold millions went into Teresa's coffers.
Her "clinics" offered "medical care" to the dying that wavered between primitive and nonexistent. On those rare occasions when medicine was administered, old and dirty needles were used. Doctors or nurses were rarely present. And, notoriously, no pain-killers were offered, in accordance with Teresa's belief that suffering makes one more virtuous[like it did Jesus, get it?} Contrast that with the medical care Teresa lavished upon herself: when she needed heart surgery, she jetted around the world to get it from the very best and costliest hospitals. And she could damned well afford it!
The whole "clinic" scam just was a transparent effort to get deathbed conversions to Catholicism, anyway. The main point is that not only did Teresa do nothing to alleviate suffering, she directly contributed to it with her fierce championing of the Church's draconian and medieval policy on birth control.
More troubling is that she wasn't too choosy about where her money came from. Teresa lavishly praised such brutal dictators as the Duvaliers of Haiti and Enver Hoxha in her native Albania - provided they made generous cash contributions to her. An even more generous contributor was Charles Keating, imprisoned for stealing upwards of $1 billion in the Lincoln S&L scandal - millions of which ended up in Teresa's pocket. It is a bit of a mystery to me why Teresa wasn't also sent to prison for accepting money she KNEW to be stolen, since you or I would be sent there for doing so.
This could fill a book, but the point is made. A slick and well-funded publicity campaign can take even an atrocious person and make her look saintly. And it Teresa's case, it did.

She was a living saint
She was a money-grubbing self-serving publicity whore
She was somewhere in between

Christopher Hitchens also dislikes Mother Teresa. According to Hitchens, during Charles Keating's trial, Mother Teresa sent a letter to the judge, asking that he take pity on Keating, because that is what Jesus would do. The judge didn't reply, but the prosecutor did. He said that that Keating stole the money which he gave to Mother Teresa and that she should return the money to Keating's victims, since that's what Jesus would do. Mother Teresa did not reply.

And i thought that Mother Teresa was one of organised religions truly good people. Another illusion shattered. I feel a bit sad about it. Got any good reference sites on the subject? I would like to read up a bit!

Quirk99: Christopher Hitchens took the lead in digging up the dirt on Ma Teresa. He wrote a whole book on it entitled "The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice". By Google-ing key words "christopher hitchens mother teresa" you will get a wealth of material. Hope this helps.
