Too many people are dying right now, but what would you say, if anything?

Please don't go and become cannon fodder in Iraq for a bunch of rich old white men
Yes, deliver the ultimate sacrifice for your Country
I'd be speechless
I'd listen but wouldn't interfere in their choice
That's a toughie - I don't know
Don't do it!!!
It is a patriotic Duty
enlist into National Guard, drink beer, act retarded
Don't die for Israel

It would be a very tough call.

Depends on the country, if my son wanted to join the Canadian army I would support it.
by ABC on Fri Oct 29, 04 5:20pm [+]

Canadian army is only accepting fat kids who wear heavy prescription glasses. If he can't do 7 pushups without breaking a sweat, then I'd say they're eligible.
by um__yeah on Fri Oct 29, 04 5:33pm [+]

This is a tough one, because I've got a cousin, all of twenty and smart as he wants to be, wanting to put on that uniform and troop off to Iraq, saying, "It's my duty as an American." I WANT to tell him that he can serve withOUT going over into East Hell, but I don't want him to feel as though I don't support him. So I'll keep my council, no matter the result.
by Truthseeker013 on Fri Oct 29, 04 5:34pm [+]

My family tried to stop me from joining, but I did not listen.

Kids always have to find out the hard way I guess, but often then it's too late. :o(

I hated being in the millitary. Oh, I felt good about serving my country, but the day to day stuff, that nearly killed me! Very few people do well in the millitary, most hate it and want out as quick as they can.
by Cains_sister_Cathy on Fri Oct 29, 04 7:09pm [+]

i'd show them i care about them above all.
id sacrifice for them too, help them make an informed choice.Ask them if its really in their heart want to go and rape women and kill people for lucre. Id start with the testicles ,then take out the collar bone...Move on to other things.

Cheeky_Monkey: Disappointing comment from you. I won't rate you down for it, but I'm sorely tempted. You seemed like such a nice guy on some other ballots.

Normally in peacetime, I would say, "Join! It'll be good for you!" but now that the USA is at war, I would say, "Join! Our very freedom depends on it!" However, I do have misgivings at this time about the above as I have a nephew who just turned 14 and in just 4 years from now, he will be required to register for the draft. I also have four step-grandsons, three of whom are in their early 20's. That scares me because wars like the one we are now fighting can go on indefinitely and besides that, there are rumors abounding that the draft may make a comeback after being dormant for 31 years.

I will let them make thier own decision, but let them know that i think it is a Noble profession and a patriotic duty, I wish that there was at least one year of mandatory tour of duty after high school....teach the younger folks patriotism...and respect for the Flag..
by Bafkoof on Sat Oct 30, 04 1:57pm [+]

Had a friend who went off to war.I said honestly, "come on man ,its all crap.I can just see you in a box and 4 what ?."
But he was adamant, it was a matter of honour and he was devoted certainly to his brethren
He was probably right. The demons stole his sisters bike ,had raided their turf .They kicked some major ass.

How about during a time of war, if you really believe - if you KNOW in your heart that it's an unjust war. Would you be able to stay silent? I'm not sure I could.
by xxxxxxxx on Sun Oct 31, 04 2:28am [+]

I'd say welcome to the fold, and be thankful that this person was not brainwashed into believing liberal rhetorich shit about the military.
by jappy on Sun Oct 31, 04 6:10am [+]

It's nothing to do with "Liberal rhetoric shit." A war is either unjust or just. A pre-emptive war against a country that never attacked us and with no hard evidence of intent to do so in the future is not a just war. That's my opinion and although I wouldn't try to force that teenager to adopt my opinion I'd ask him or her to study the evidence and look at the whole picture before jumping into the bloodbath.
by xxxxxxxx on Sun Oct 31, 04 8:24am [+]

Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger.

"mandatory tour of duty after high school" - Why is it that the conservatives, whom accuse the left of 'lack of freedoms' (and they do not even specify) are the same one's who would like to infringe on their citizens freedoms. Compulsory military? Is that not against their 'freedoms'... or is it different... or is just plain hypocritical? It looks to be the latter.

Contrary to most people, I would NOT be shy in exercising my freedom of speech and telling them what I think. Otherwise why did he seek my counsel in the first place? Just so I can say 'whatever you think'. I WILL completely give my point of view and I won't mince words either, and he will still be free to choose anyway.

Even if I am only slightly against it, I will still say exactly what I think. I would not hesitate at all in telling them I disapprove in any way. They came to me asking for advice? I will give advice NOT some neutral non-commital response. Besides, they wouldn't at all be shocked at me being outspoken. They know me and would most-likely expect it.

Don't die for Israel.
by xxxxxxxx on Thu Dec 23, 04 10:24pm [+]

Don't. They fuck you over. It's all economics. They prey on kids (kids! amazing they can die for their country or lose a limb but can't legally drink beer!!) from workin g class and poor backgrounds. Our military isn't being used for legit purposes. Unfortunately, our congress isn't fulfilling it's constitutional duty. If George Bush and Don Rumsfeld fucked up as badly as they have in Iraq in a private business venture do you think shareholders would accept their explanations and continue going down the wrong path. Fuck no.
