GOVERNMENT & MARRIAGE

[+] serious ballot by Cathexis
created Sat Nov 06, 04

A huge uproar hit the US in 2004 over the question of Gay Marriage. Sides immediately polarized: For or Against. Black or White. You're with us or against us.

IMO, both sides had good points. One side asserted the religious aspects: A valid point. The other noted rights ... another valid point. However, few people exhibited patience to hear or consider the other side, in their zeal to get their own way.

The question occurs to me: Should government have any role in marriage *at all*?

What would you think of the following proposal:

Government may officate Civil Unions ... only. Not (quote-unquote) Marriage.

Religions may officiate a subset of Civil Unions: Marriage. This leaves marriage as a religious institution, enjoying Civil Union legal status.

In this way, gay couples could enjoy the civil benefits of Civil Union, but Religions would not have to ignore their principles.

Would you be in favor of such an approach? [Note: If you add an option, please start with teh appropriate tag (Yes:, No:, Undecided:, etc.) before stating reason, for uniform readability.]

Yes: Sounds as if it addresses major concerns
No: Separate but equal is not equal
No: Legitimizes homosexuality
No: Gives excessive weight to religious unions
Civil Unions for all legally recognized couples
only where child bearing couples are concerned
No civil unions and no govt interference in people;s marriage customs or choices

Actually, all couples would be Civil Union, unless they chose the religious subset: Marriage.

GREAT idea. The Federal government should stay the hell out and stop constantly nannying our lives.

I've said before that those who are willing to defend marriage as sacred need to realize that marriages in America are ending in divorce at an all-time high percentage, and that the "sancitity" of HETERO marriage needs to be defined before we run around bashing the concept of gay marriage. I have two friends who have been in a relationship for almost twenty years now, and Miss Britney Spears has been married TWICE in the last eighteen months.

Well bother ... I just discovered that magdalenasdollar has beaten me to this proposal with Ballot #55854.

That's what I get for not doing a thorough enough preliminary search. :-(

Hey now! Yours is stated much better and the topic should be readdressed and rereaddressed until equality prevails! As much as it would upset people at first, the sanctity of Marriage should have nothing to do with Governments and States, this is where their folly lies! If we are to have true equality, the Government cannot impose its ideals on our personal lives!

Great ballot! ;)

She's so nice and smooth! (Wait ... that didn't sound at ALL as I intended!)

Ironically, I missed seeing her ballot because I was off getting married. ;-)

Love is a gift, no matter who the involved parties are.

I don't see why the government should have any say over marriages.

A civil union would be simply a legal contract drawn up between two or more people and as long as it fulfills all the requirements of a legal contract it should be binding and enforced by the law.

The question that occurs to me when I am confronted with marital issues in general, and multipal, Mormon and gay marriage in particular, is what are these people thinking? Why do they need the state to legitimize their unions. Consider: if the strange people in Utah just had a little private ceremony and claimed they were married by God, they couldn't be prosecuted. Empowering the state to put you in jail is a ridiculous move.

Perhaps the argument for inheritance, insurance, et al require some people to pursue that formalization of their union, but most states are willing to concede a partnership status to gay men and women to end the challenge to "normal" marriage. I'd forget the brain damage of state approval and move on.

I'm undecided about gay marriage and about government's role in marriage, but I would like to say that opinions against gay marriage don't necessarily have anything to do with religion.
