A QUESTION ON MIDDLE EAST OIL IMPORTS

[+] ballot by xxxxxxxx
created Sat Nov 06, 04

Excerpted from Amory Lovins "Our Common Future: Healing the Planet" (1989). In 1985, we [Americans] paid eighteen times as much for naval forces in the Persian Gulf as we were paying for all the oil we imported from the Gulf. That is, the oil cost us altogether about $495 a barrel, and about ninety percent of it went to our competitors, who didn't pay much of our naval bill.

We could eliminate our imports of Mideast oil by improving automobile efficiency by a measly three miles a gallon--or by investing in more heat-tight American buildings just one year's U.S. naval bill in the Persian Gulf.

That was 15 years ago in 1989. My question is, do you think it is possible to eliminate our dependence on Middle East oil, or is it too late? I might remind that during the oil crisis of 1979, President Carter HALVED the imports of foreign oil (from 8.6 to 4.3 million barrels) by encouraging conservation. Can we do that nowadays?

Yes, it is likely to happen
Yes, it's possible
No, it is not likely to happen
No, it is not possible
It's too difficult to tell

COMMENTS:
It is possible; but until it becomes profitable, it won't happen.

Unfortunately, I agree. But think of how oil companies could corner the market on green energy! If they would just invest a little in R&D, they could profit long after world oil reserves have been depleted.

Nuclear power would go a long way towards making us energy independent. Of course we haven't built any new reactors in several decades due to the outcry from ignorant protestors who insist we can get all our nations power needs from solar power.

They ought to give tax breaks to people who buy more efficient cars, to help this new market get started, rebuild our nuclear energy program, and invest in other oil rich nations (russia for instance) to help them develop their oil fields.

Also please accept the possibility that scientists who have invented water powered engines (that seperate the water into hydrogen and oxygen so the hydrogen can be burned) have had their patents bought up by the oil companies in order to silence them.
Many websites have detailed plans on how to make these water powered engines and also how to convert your car to run on water. If you accept the reality of this then you might be able to see how it is that the world is not run for the benefit of most of the people.

Unfortunately, I disagree with nuclear power. I used to think it was an amazing answer to all the energy problems, but it is not a renewable source (only seven tenths of one percent of all Uranium is fissionable), and there is no safe place, other than space for the waste (much energy is wasted just transporting it there).

Also, a nuclear accident anywhere is a nuclear accident everywhere. We only have one Earth. One of the fastest ways to pollute the Earth is to have a nuclear accident. Nuclear power is an inherently dangerous operation and all accidents ever recorded were in spite of many fail-safes which failed. Our safest path is immediate conversion to and encouragement of hybrids, and investment in energy efficient engineering practices (buildings which utilize soft energy).

All we have to do is start drilling in the ANWR. In an area less than 1% of the total area. We'll get enough oil to wean off of Saudi oil.
