When someone is in disagrees with you, what are the best ways to get them to change their mind?

Ask their viewpoint; work towards common ground
Discussion and debate
Point out the idiocy of their position
Ignore them; they can join or get trampled
Force them to your way of thinking
Lecture them
Berate them as fools

try and understand why they think the way they do
Reverse psychology :)

If you understand more about the person and why they think the way they do about an issue, you will have the insight into what issues to address to sway them over to your way of thinking. Stand in their shoes, understand their view and then play on that.

Cathexis: Thanks. Here's an example: Anytime I went shopping with my mother when I was a teenager and she commented that she liked a certain dress, I would immediately dislike it, even if I liked it before she said anything.
