COMMENTS:
This is my first year not working retail since I was fifteen years old and I'm loving not having the holidays thrust upon me any earlier than I want them (at least in my own life). Every year it seems to start earlier than the last. We're already skipping right over Thanksgiving and going into Christmas..eventually we'll just start after the 4th of July. :)
gives people lots of time to shop, I don't have a problem with the ads
I feel more distanced every year. Every year it starts earlier and for the same purpose: Sell stuff. They used to wait (with decreasing grace) until after Thanksgiving, but that threshold has long since been broached. Now many don't even wait until Halloween. Perhaps I've become cynical, but all this hype does is reinforce the fact that this holiday has been thoroughly transformed into a Consumerism Event ... at least in the US.
I'm with you, Cathexis. I am skipping it entirely this year. Felice Navidad!

ALL (or practically all) holidays have been reduced to a consumerist binge...
I used to like being a child when Christmas seemed to last a whole week. Two months though?!! We spend a sixth of our lives in f*cking Chrismastime!!!!
Oops - as they said in the A-team, missed a T.
Wasn't there a Christmas parody song several years ago that had the line, "I hate the malls, I hate the stores, I hate the people I'm shopping for"? Needless to say, I liked the first part of "A Christmas Carol."
I'm sick of them I mean what ever happened to the 12 days of xmas?
