What is the best way for a nation of diverse citizens to obtain moral values?

Legislated; punish infractions
Adopted by citizens
Ministering to the poor
Christians lead by example
The old fashion way, violence
Teaching peace, patience, kindness, gentleness etc
Christianity is responsible for the DARK AGES!

Adopted by citizens.

Morals should not be instilled by Governments, that's for sure. Oh wait, I'm just a pedestrian, too.

I must be one of those heathens the religious right are talking about. Moral values were NOWHERE on my compass when I stood in that booth and touched that screen thirty-two times. I was all about these bothersome little things called ISSUES...

I prefer to leave people to form their own ethical codes, and partake of the products produced by distilling.

I don't think any religion should impose its values on anyone else. I am a Christian, but I would not force any one else to belive like I do. The best way is to have a core set of values for the nation and for our leaders to lead by example, making sure to serve the people, and not thier own interests. Having national principles and values that embody fairness, equal human rights, openess, equal opportunity, etc. is the best place to start. The education system needs to also reflect and teach the values. Having such a diverse citizenry is a factor, but fairness, honesty, mutual respect...are all principles that transend nationality, etc.
