I'm talking the "heavyweight" champion I'm putting 10 choices that most artists would have to acknowledge as giants in their field , people who touched the others , the path finders. If you like "Jazz" Miles Davis was "The Man" If you like "Country" you know that Toby Keith couldn't wipe Hank Williams boots. If you like "Rock" you've gotta know Jimmi Hendrix played the guitar better than anyone who do you think was the most influential?

Robert Johnson. Legendary "Blues" man.(Supposedly sold his soul to the devil.)
Duke Ellington. Many were inspired by "Sir Duke".
Chuck Berry. Another trail blazing pioneer of Rock & Roll.
Elvis Presley. Sam Phillips got just what he wanted , a white boy with a black voice.
The Beatles.- Led the "British Invasion"
Bob Dylan. -directly or indirectly influenced many.
Jimmi Hendrix. - He could do on a guitar , what many only dreamed of.
Miles Davis.-"The Jazz musician". He invented fusion Jazz.
Led Zepplin. - four rock virtuosos. All "poser" bands must kneel and pay homage.
Eric Clapton. - One of the guitar greats.
Hank Williams. The father of country music.
James Brown - The Godfather of Funk and Soul
The Rolling Stones - Forerunners of Grunge
The Sex Pistols - Pioneers of Punk
Muddy Waters - Grandpappy of Rhythm and Blues
Vanilla Ice - Wigger influence still felt today
The Monkees - Pre-fab boy bands can rake in cash
Velvet Underground - Another alternative pioneer
Bill Haley - The first popular R&R song
Ramones - creators of punk
Frank Sinatra--perfected combination of pop & jazz

I'd say Bill Haley, since "Rock Around the Clock" started the rock 'n' roll movement (although it was not the first rock 'n' roll song).

What a tough one.

I'll go with either Hendrix for his influence on so many future guitarists or Dylan for completely redefining what popular music can be
