COMMENTS:
People can be poor because of bad luck but a lot of people are poor because they are either lazy or stupid.
As an addendum to thcs comment, a lot of people are poor because they are more ethical, moral, trusting and not ruled by money! I think it is very sad that a persons worth is often defined by the amount of money they have or earn. This seems to be much more apparent in Americans! So many of you dont want a welfare state, saying that people should be able to pay for medical treatment - or what? Or die? We may have bad teeth in England, but we dont often starve to death or die of curable illnesses. Maybe, too many Americans are latching on to the corporate greed syndrome. Maybe, this is why an oaf like Bush got re-elected. Some of the most creative people in Britain existed "on the dole" whilst they were making their masterpieces. It often took longer than a year to reach a conclusion. If there was no "safety-net" how would individual non-corporate works of art come into being? How does it happen in America? Does one have to have rich parents or sponsors to make it happen?
Most of them are poor because they were born into poor families.
You should register, Guest -- nice question.
"THERE DUMB" = Classic.
Born into poor families, bad luck and or stupidity, the poverty cycle is difficult to break, for example: if you have $1 to buy margarine you get 1LB, if you have $3 you get 5LB, it goes on and on.

quirk I support the safety net, but I hate the people who live off of welfare because they are lazy. My parents and I have recieved benefits from some of those programs but they were TEMPORARY.
I think people are poor because they are lazy, or don't care about money, or are disabled in some way, or uneducated. I don't think anyone has to stay poor if they don't want to. There are many opportunities available for education/job training if you want to sacrifice the time and effort it will take.
Oh, and good eye, _Beelzebubba!
Could someone answer my question about the arts in america, please? Are there any non-corporate ones, and are any there are all created by the offspring of the comfortably off?
1 Capitalists 2 Deforestation
3 Urbanisation
You say that money, isn't everything, But I'd like to see you live without it, You think you can keep on going living like a king, Oohh babe, but I strongly doubt it, Very hard to drink, Very hard to drink, You gonna wait too, fat boy, Fat boy, wait til tomorrow, You gonna wait too, fat boy, Fat boy, wait til tomorrow, You, wait til tomorrow, You, wait til tomorrow, You gonna wait too, fat boy, Fat boy, wait til tomorrow, You gonna wait too, fat boy, Fat boy, wait til tomorrow.
quirk I don't know how much private support there is for art in the states, but I don't believe people like Picasso and Dali were supported by by government money.
Ther are a variety of reason why a person could be poor. The two main reasons people live in poverty are the lack education and socialization. People learn what they live. Without exposure to adequate academic, financial, and social education it is highly likely that they will remain poor. That education can not come from schools that are under funded and under staffed.
i guess by "poor" you must mean the 90 out of 100 people in other parts of the world who live in poverty. the ones in the "never to be developed" countries. by their standards, the poor in the west are rich. But still, the system sucks..I like the new acronym; CGS Corporate Greed Syndrome..I think it might be horribly contagious.
the rich did not make them poor and keep them poor, in fact it is their taxes that pay for their welfare, educaton, and in my country healthcare
There are many reasons why many people are cursed with poverty. Some are born into it. Others don't realize what it takes to get out of poverty. Some don't have the technical or social skills necessary to acquire a decent paying job. Some feel they are disenfranchised because of their race or ethnic group, so they despise wealthier people. Some are mentally disabled and do not have the ability to keep a job. Some are simply content to not work and barely stay alive, spending their days and hours doing God knows what. The truth is, that breaking out of poverty is a very daunting task even for those blessed with the potential to do so. Also, although having wealth certainly eases the hardships of life, there is no guarantee that you'll life a fuller, longer life. You can end up dead just the same. I just feel bad reading all the insensitive comments by some of the people on this board. Blanket statements such as "people are poor because they're dumb" or because "poor people are lazy" are just plain idiotic and cannot be substantiated. There are many poor people with stronger moral fiber than there are rich people with better moral fiber. All poor people are not "lazy and stupid", just as all rich people are not "evil" or "greedy" or whatever. In my humble opinion, poverty is the biggest problem facing the world. What exacerbates poverty? Many things. Religion, for one. Guilt, self esteem (which we fail to teach our children), apathy (from feeling the system is out to "get" you), despair, Because Poverty breeds class hatred, racism, bigotry, and brings forth such terrible systems such as facism and communism. The "system" if you can call it that, has proven for centuries that it doesn't work. If the problem of human greed could be solved, then half of the world's problems could be solved. The truth of the matter is that a lot of people feel they are getting shafted. I agree. I have always seen money as a tool. A means to an end. To assign value to money over human life is disgusting. To value corporate profits over human lives is a total abomination. A total horror, and disgusting. I can find no good reason as to why a CEO in America makes 100 times more money per year (plus a huge bonus) than his janitor, who keeps his building clean. I think human greed is the most disgusting cancer that has plagued humanity since the Stone Age. A pity that with all of our accumulated knowledge we still cannot find a solution to the problem of poverty. If there could be a more stable distribution of wealth around the world, we would eliminate 90% of the reasons we go to war in the first place. What a fucking shame. Make no mistake. Getting out of poverty is VERY hard. And it certainly is NOT fair. We should not accept that life is "unfair"... that some lucky folks get to be rich and a lot of other folks get the short end of the stick. We should NOT accept old cliches as fact. We have a responsibility to hold ourselves accountable for the well being of our fellow man. Isn't that what "Christians" supposed to do? You tell me.
