Define the term "poor"? I grew up in a financially strapped family in Bushwick, Brooklyn New York (Suydham St.) and we didn't have the "things" I guess that kids have today, but my Parents taught me/us the greatest lessons in life...caring, compassion, trust, honor..among others..my favorite of the many they taught us was...the Spirit of Christmas.....you're not poor...poor is a verb to describe someone who has little...you had, have and always will have so much! :)
I grew up poor, too, at least in the early days after my father died when I was 5 years old. He had inherited a lot of money, but had gambled himself into massive debt towards the end of his life, so my mother had to sell practically everything and go out to work to raise us. We went without a lot of material things, but we always had the things we needed and never felt poor because there was a lot of laughter in our house, and a lot of love. But I agree with you, being poor limits choices drastically. The odds seem stacked against until a way through can be found. Great ballot, btw. :)
I'm stuck in the house, and even if I could find somewhere to go that's cheap or free I can't afford the gas to get there.
I can relate to what both Kumbaya and Zig have said. My parents taught me the value of education even though my Dad's education didn't get him much. They instilled a desire for knowledge, and taught me to think outside of the box. They also taught me to respect others and have a sense of responsibility. The experience of growing up poor makes me appreciate what I now have & developed in me a compassion for others.
Yes, those were - and are - the best gifts of all.
Indeed ZIG!
It's sad and shameful that your father had to go through that.

There are a lot of things a person can learn from being poor. Me, I feel pity for those who were born with the silver spoon in their mouth... there are so many rewarding experiences to be had when you spend time poor, going paycheck to paycheck.
The worst thing is that when your are poor and looking for work, there are companies out there that claim that they can find you a job for a fee, but it turns out to be a scam and they take your money and run.
Not having much money. Duh!
"poor"is a relative term, while you may think you were poor, there were probably other kids who had a lot less. And im willing to bet that by some third world standards, you probably werent that badly off...i mean, did you have a toilet that flushed or an outhouse? did you have to go for a few days at a time without a good meal? did you have to mix sugar and water as a beverage accompaniment to your meal? did you have to line your old winter coats with newspaper to keep warm? did all of your family have to sleep on one bed? or one mattress on the floor? did you have a regular supply of electricity? did you or your family get some strange skin disease because you didnt have enough water to bathe properly and couldnt go to the doctor to treat it? did you suffer from malnutrition? did your dad ever have to pretend that christmas was actually on the 26th so that he could salvage a tree from the curb to bring to the house? could you afford deodarant? and toothpaste? remember this quote "I cried when I had no shoes, but then I saw someone who had no feet" It was bad that you encountered racism but what doesnt kill us, makes us stronger.
Being poor.
