EPA WILL USE LOW-INCOME KIDS AS GUINEA PIGS IN NEW STUDY ON PESTICIDES. HOW LOW WILL THESE BASTARDS GO?

Report: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), led by Bush appointees, plans to launch a new study in which participating low income families will have their children exposed to toxic pesticides over the course of two years. The study entitled CHEERS (Children’s Environmental Exposure Research Study) will look at how chemicals can be ingested, inhaled or absorbed by children ranging from babies to 3 years old.

For taking part in these studies, each family will receive $970, a free video camera, a T-shirt, and a framed certificate of appreciation.

In October, the EPA received $2 million to do the study from the American Chemistry Council, a chemical industry front group that includes members such as DOW, EXXON, and MONSANTO. Critics of the research claim the study's funders guarantee the results will be biased in favor of the chemical industry, at the expense of the health of the impoverished children serving as test subjects.

Participants for the study were chosen from 6 health clinics and three hospitals in Jacksonville, FL. These medical facilities report that 51% of their births are to non-white mothers and 62% of mothers have only received an elementary or secondary education.

The EPA's Linda Sheldon says the study is vital, because so little is known about how small children's bodies absorb harmful chemicals.

On November 11th, the EPA announced suspension of the study's launch until early 2005 for the sake of "final review."

Should this study be allowed to go ahead?

No. This is disgusting exploitation
Yes, this is vital research
They've been using us all as guinea pigs for years anyway, so what's new?
Not sure
Though disgusted, I'm not in the least surprised.
about time too
Yes, no one is forcing anyone to be part of study

COMMENTS:
$970, a video camera, a T-shirt and a framed certificate of appreciation? Big Wows. Makes me wonder why they're throwing a video camera in there. To record the effects of toxic chemicals on the consenting parents' own flesh and blood?

Um ... isn't this illegal?
by Cathexis on Sun Nov 14, 04 10:05am [+]

I tried to find some more information on this and only one website even mentioned it and it was a forum site. could you tell me where you found this information please?
by larrynelmira on Sun Nov 14, 04 10:15am [+]

I checked the epa's website and couldn't find it there, although I may have overlooked it
by larrynelmira on Sun Nov 14, 04 10:16am [+]

Larry, I found the original report on the Organic Consumers website, but if you go to CNN International, there's a mention of it there. Alternatively, go to Google News and type in EPA pesticide study.

Cathexis: Yes it should be illegal, but obviously isn't. Shocking how cavalier these chemical giants are becoming with the blessings of government bodies.
by xxxxxxxx on Sun Nov 14, 04 10:24am [+]

thanks, I found this, the study has been postponed, hopefully it won't be reenstated.

WASHINGTON -- A planned government study into how children's bodies absorb pesticides and other chemicals has been temporarily suspended due to ethical concerns
by larrynelmira on Sun Nov 14, 04 10:26am [+]

Apparently it was suspended only because of public outcry, but they (the EPA) plan to revive the study in the spring of 2005, once they've pretended to 'address the issues.'

The creative roll had to run out eventually.Without the 50s,60s ,70s and 80s sublimating ourselves into sex , drugs , rock n roll and a kind of general decency we hadnt seen before in the west, things have gone back to business as usual.Ethnic cleansing, social engineering programs , corporate-military tactics are back to old blatant brazenness

I should have something to say about this, but I'm too shocked. Then again, I'm not surprised either.
by zootoboot on Sun Nov 14, 04 5:11pm [+]

It was only 'bout the early 70s that the old era of mad mediaeval european , colonial superstition seemed to come to a general end.Illusory advances in "rights" like taking homosexuality off the DSM 4 , Aboriginals , the ceasing of biological weapons testing and other guinea pig programs on western populations like NEW YORK, (didja know that , dearest Yanks ?? ) , Mengele style experimentation on pregnant women, baby snatching from single mums, CIA mind control programs etc etc.
We had about the closest thing at last to a general freeing up of the Middle class.Remeber them wife swapping parties, politicians WITH LONG HAIR , getting openly drunk around the barbie ( the stick another shrimp on one) , Byron Bay, The Little River Band, AC/DC
Not now.Everythings ultraconservative and PC again and here come the same ol 50s rednecks and dogooders .

"The next day, her teacher asked Shonowa to head down to the assistant principals office for refusing to stand up for the daily pledge of allegiance. Shonowa, sure of her first of amendment rights, was met by the assistant principal with little tolerance. He barely let Shonowa say anything to explain her reasons for refusing to stand, and denied her constitutional rights. He told Shonowa to call the ACLU, and while she's at it he added to say "when you speak to them don't tell that I threatened to kill you, just give them the facts" Shonowa then questioned this by saying, "why would I say something like, if you didn't say it ." He replied " I had to refrain myself from saying it. "

LCB: Is that you trying to be controversial again?!
by xxxxxxxx on Wed Nov 17, 04 11:18pm [+]

Republican_Rightwing, the two issues are quite separate. These 'test subjects' are living, breathing, people. Not to say that unborn children aren't, but... it's still wrong to deliberately expose innocent children to lethal chemicals, just as it would be wrong to use unborn fetuses for a comparable study.
by xxxxxxxx on Wed Nov 17, 04 11:25pm [+]

What's the difference? Both are killing human beings.
