COMMENTS:
Apparently the French didn't have a word for "surrender" in the 18th century, when they won our Revolutionary War for us. If they hadn't we'd all be Canadians now, and you know how rotten the weather is in Canada. So how many words for "gratitude" are in the vocabulary of right-wingers? Obviously zero.
They didn't win the war for us. Their official stance was that they'd help only after it became clear that we were winning on our own. As a result they didn't show up until the very last moment. Granted they did play a crucial role, but we did most of the work. Besides which: the french of the 1800s would probably be just as disgusted with the french of today as the rest of us are. Those people went on to conquer most of europe, and made a good account of themselves even while losing. Then at some point all their best men must have died off or left, because they were fairly pathetic in the last century, and they aren't shaping up to be any better in this one.
Already got the third enemy lined up? Always thinkin' two moves ahead! :D
How many words are there for 'bigot' are there? Offensive and racist ballot.
How 'bout this one: How many words for "bully" does the English language have?

The above comment is mine. I timed out.
The ballot isn't about morality, it's about the fighting abilities, or lack thereof, of the french army. Saying they were rather pathetic in the last century directly addresses this issue. Wether they'll admit it or not the french army does have a problem with surrendering in the middle of a war.
Of course after they are liberated all the brave french soldiers will run out into the street and beat up women who slept with nazis. An heroic effort, vital to the defense of their nation.
The above comment is mine, again. These time-outs are starting to get on my nerves!
Alright guest: both those wars were not our problem. They were european affairs, started by europeans, and only relevent to europeans. We fought when their little conflict spilled over into our half of the world. A better example would be our civil war. An entirely american affair, we didn't need european help. Both sides, especially the south, were bleed white in this conflict. We've had our wars, and WE were the ones to finish them. Europe always manages to drag us into their conflicts. Since you are such an avid student of history did you know that the french troops actually mutinied during wwI demanding better conditions? And that to put down the mutiny the government agreed that french troops would no longer be responsible for any more offensive actions during the war? Pretty cowardly considering they were fighting to defend their own country. The british fought through till the end, under the same conditions, and to guard someone elses home. Germany suffered greater devastation, both to her economy and to her population following wwI than france did. And yet they managed to make a comeback. Why is that? Why is it that an untrained group of jews in warsaw managed to hold off the wehrmarkt longer than the entire french army? Why was it that with superior numbers of men, artillery, aircraft and tanks (most people don't realize this) and while fighting on their own territory they were still easily defeated by the germans? I'd like answers to these questions please.
Your problem, Herzog, is that you just won't take "yes" for an answer. If you calm down and actually read my above 2 comments, you'll realize that I agreed with you that France was lousy at fighting wars in the 20th century. {Though thankfully they were still pretty good at it in the 18th, which is why America exists today.} Okay? You should learn to be a gracious winner! That being said, I once again invite you to answer MY question: How, exactly, can the morality of a man or a nation be judged solely by their fighting ability? And if it can't be, then why do the French serve the same role for you NeoCons, as the Jews did for the Nazis?
The statement about the French must be news to those in the resistance during WWII. If only there were more resistance in the people of the world, perhaps war would be obsolete.
Neal: my comment was in response to your assertion that the french had 'earned' the right to be cowardly surrender monkeys. They haven't. Nobody earns that right. And military might is neither moral nor immoral, it all depends on how it is used. However, when it comes to defending your own nation, on your own soil from a dictatorial regime it IS immoral to simply surrender and condemn you countrymen, and possibly the rest of the world to tyrrany.
Herzog, I wrote the above. Timed out again. Maybe B&W is telling me to write shorter comments.
I'm amazed american_empire managed to leave this one alone...
'"Cowardly" is not a word Americans should use to decribe a nation which suffered proportionally greater combat losses than our country did, in both World Wars. The French loss in WW II resulted from incompetent leadership, not lack of courage.' Two parts: 1) they should have suffered far greater casualties than we did, it was their war, on their territory. You could just as easily say they were cowardly during the revolution for only joining at the last minute and making the US suffer most of the deaths. It wasn't their war so nobody expected them to fight as hard, or suffer as much as we did, and vice versa. 2) their leadership actively cooperated with the nazis following the war. They could have fought to the death, they could have refused to aid the enemies and gone off to the camps like so many brave polish, russian, and ukrainian fighters. Instead they choose to surrender and aid their enemy. French troops opposed allied landings in north africa, this wasn't some fluke, they actually worked against us. They earned the title of 'cowards'. 'Chosing death over surrender' If they fear the risk of death greater than they love freedom then they are welcome to their chains, and it's a pity such a bunch of sniveling cowards will be forever tied to western culture.
"When peace stands for surrender, fear, loss of dignity and freedom, it is no longer peace. It's suicide."
JOKE BALLOT!! Geesh, some of you need to get a grip!!
If they had a word assoiciated with every time its happened, the language would be way too confusing.
