Because anyone who has ANY beliefs obviously believes them because they think they are correct and the longer any one person sits in those beliefs with no one challenging the beliefs, the harder headed they become.

The idea that 'My religion is right, all others are wrong' seems to have appeared about 2500 years ago. The biologist Richard Dawkins suggests that this idea is like a virus. It may be a very sick idea, but it is successful in that anyone infected with it will tend to try and convert others - and today much of the world has been conquered by people who are so infected.
Shamanism and Buddhism are examples of religions whose followers do not teens to be so infected.
The fact that there are so many different religions that all believe they're right is a pretty good indication that none of them are.
