[REVISED] CREEPING PURITANISM?

[+] serious ballot by Cathexis
created Fri Nov 19, 04

[Revised to allow comments]

Are recent events such as Sinclair Broadcasting's power play attempt, ABC's Superbowl ban on non-government sponsored political advertising, the Janet Jackson flap, Howard Stern's battles with the FCC, increased media consolidation, and the specter of reprisal that's forced stations to self-censor Saving Private Ryan and ads for Kinsey -- coupled with a growing tendency to protest anything even remotely dealing with nudity or sex, even while blithely accepting most forms of violence -- indicative of a move by the United States in a direction of revived Puritanism?

Yes, we are witnessing a rollback to the Middle Ages, (or at least the 1950s) and a new age of McCarthyist Stepfordism is upon us.

I've sadi this before, but if it's good, you stick with it.

Goodbye, constitutional republic. Hello, theocracy...

That should be "said".

It's cyclical. The Ultra Conservatives felt that the Clinton years were wild, free and crazy like. So, they feel they have to make up ground. Personally, I think it will have an effect they don't expect: namely, Americans will not tolerate it for too long and then we will go to the other end of the extreme. Polarized. That's the best word. I think the funniest thing is that all the lying bas*ards in government and in religious cirlces who promote themselves as the "ideal moral and upstanding American," are really the dirtiest, most dishonest and evil bunch there is!

Should there be no standards? Should Howard Stern be the arbiter of decency?

What is Sinclair's power play attempt? That is just a way for you to throw up something to attract the liberal lemmings to this ballot. If you want to talk about censorship in the context of Sinclair, why was the airing of "Stolen Honor" censored. Because it told the truth about the war criminal John F-ing Kerry. That is why.

CC: So we can translate that as your voting: No creeping Puritanism ... it's all evil to me ... right? ;-)

I think that you would have to do a much better job a defining Puritanism. Or are we to use the Nathaniel Hawthorne definition of Puritans?

Did you know that amongst Puritans the superstition was that if a man didn't give his woman an orgasm during sex then their baby would be retarded. That is not so unenlightened is it?

It is not all "The Scarlet Letter". I know that you are not stupid so, you are either choosing to make Puritanism into some evil form of insult or you are not aware of the many very "progressive" aspects of Puritanism. It of course sucks in the view of 2004, but they were doing it in the 1500's.

Anyways I am Catholic so all of these Protestants are going to hell anyway in my view.
by xxxxxxxx on Sun Nov 21, 04 9:54pm [+]

cc: Uh ... yes ... that is unenlightened.

man I am starting to doubt you. From now on when I address you I am being serious. If something seems really out of the ordinary from our other discussions then please consider that it is humor first. Okay.

cc: The problem is ... that means a lot of what I hear you say would be Humour. ;-)

It does look like the United States, or at least half of it, is moving towards religious fundamentalism. I don't support censorship, but I am perplexed that there's a demand for nudity and for Howard Stern's style of entertainment. People look much better with their clothes on.
