A Cult is a religion with no political power, and with a few hundred members instead of a few million.

A religion is constructive, a cult is destructive. Religions build great civilizations; cults withdraw from them or (in the case of the Wahhabis of Saudi Arabia and other 'Islamic' fundamentalists) ruin them.

"Religion is constructive" Tell that to the all those burned at the stake as witches.

Tell that to Galileo who was in-prisoned by the church that didn't want to hear what his telescope found.

Tell that to various countries throughout the world that had their cultures and traditions banished by missionaries and replaced by Christian points-of-view to reflect their new found god.

I guess constructive is subjective.

Ha. that guy spelled imprisoned wrong. A cult is headed by a living "master" character put forth to brainwash members. Cults give members assigned seats in their worship places and deprive them of outside contact. Christianity itself is not a religion, but a belief.

I knew a guy once who was in a cult, and he was drugged, brainwashed, and almost killed..

Religion is an established foundation stemming from thousands of years of belief. A cult is an temporary organization of people who share a common belief.
by Freon on Wed Jul 06, 05 9:41pm [+]

Nothing if more permanent than that which is temporary. Therefore if a cult lasts long enough, it becomes a religion. All religions start as cults, imo.
