WHY DO NEGATIVIVE STEREOTYPES ABOUT NATIONALITIES AND ETHNICITIES PERSIST IN OUR SUPPOSEDLY ENLIGHTENED WORLD?

At my Language school we have Americans and Canadians. Nearby schools have teachers from New Zealand and Australia. I also have a friend from South Africa who lives near my apartment. We crack a joke with each other now and again but we all get along. Travelling in the world gives you an objectivity you can't get living in just one country. People want the same things in all countries. Food to eat. Friends and family to love. A modest income. Freedom . Political , religious , freedom to live as they see fit. Still negative stereotypes persist. All Jews are this , all French are that. It's all the Americans fault! Koreans don't trust the Japanese , Vietnamese fear the Chinese. What perpuates all these negative stereo types?

People fear what they dont unsterstand.
Lack of empathy and compassion for others.
Past History.
Lack of education.
Nationalism.
Apathy and Indifference.
The worlds not a "Global" village yet.
The world's not as enlightened as we'
It's an ongoing socioligical process.
It's Cultural evolution.
fear and ignorance
because they are so true!
Zionism
OMG, too many huge words in title!! I piss myself
Because we are not enlightened

Past history. Most stereotypes are based on fact.

Ignorance and fear that someone else will get an advantage in life that we are "robbed" of.

Most steretypes contain an element of truth

Some stereotypes do contain a grain of truth, but there are usually plenty of exceptions to them. In my personal experience, travel has convinced me that people everywhere are all weird in similar ways.

"People want the same things in all countries. Food to eat. Friends and family to love. A modest income. Freedom . Political , religious , freedom to live as they see fit."

Really? An extremely high income is much more desirable than a modest income. And friends and family... not very desirable. Also, some people might prefer security over freedom.

Sometimes I am surprisd at how horrible my closest freinds can be to other people (while being nice 99% of the time). I probably lapse into EVIL as well on occasion.

You can weigh up the natural instinct to protect your own, and to fear that which is different against the instinct to help those in need.

I suggest that EVERYTHING we do is driven by a selfish desire, from calling someone a name, to giving to charity... etc etc.

In summation I think ALL people are evil (if there is such a thing).

did i say that? what a tit
by Civilian on Mon Nov 29, 04 9:38am [+]

well no, you are actually correct. Contoversial as it may seem, all human beings are inherently selfish.

Its the nature of being an animal.
by Doctordraw on Tue Nov 30, 04 12:59am [+]

Yes, everyone is inherently selfish. I don't think this is evil because selfishness makes sense.
by zorra on Tue Nov 30, 04 1:13am [+]

Yep, you can always break it down like that.

The only reason we are here is because our ancestors have passed on their genes and selfishly protected them.

With this thought, the only characteristics which would be passed on to us are those which lead to us having a better chance of passing on our genes AND protecting them.

So, EVERYTHING we do is driven by a selfish desire AND there is no point to your life other than to continue this cycle. It isn't leading anywhere. Is it?
by Civilian on Tue Nov 30, 04 3:10am [+]

I blame it on the Eskimos, those fat, fur-wearing, fish-eatings f**ks. ;)
by _Beelzebubba on Tue Nov 30, 04 2:24pm [+]

Civilian: I agree that continuing the cycle is pointless. Passing on your genes out of selfishness is a misguided kind of selfishness because your genes continue on in someone who is not you. I care about myself as an individual. I do not care about the continuation of my genes.
