COMMENTS:
Hunting for food is one thing, but hunting and calling it a 'sport' is another. The real sport would be if the hunter tried to kill the animal without any weapon. I would suggest arming the animals, but few have opposable thumbs.
I don't hunt, but I have nothing against hunters as long as the population of the species you're hunting is healthy. In some cases hunting is helpful in keeping an animal population from growing out of control.
If it's for food to survive, it's more understandable; I know that in certain parts of the world, the people may have no alternative than to hunt for food. In the more developed parts of the world, I have a very hard time understanding the need to hunt for sport. I tend to be a bit of an animal rights advocate, so the idea of hurting an animal in any way is a totally alien concept to me. I know that even in the U.S. there are hunters who will say that they eat the Deer meat and that they make something out of the Deer skin, but again, I sincerely doubt they hunt out of necessity. I have never seen an animal get shot by a gun or an arrow and I know that I could never witness that...it would haunt me for the rest of my life.
"Hunting for food is one thing, but hunting and calling it a 'sport' is another." by Steely I completely agree with this point.
I need to go lie down, we have found common ground LCB, LOL.
That makes three of us :-D

Erm..for food? No. To satisfy one's needs, no. But in Canada, during the seal hunt, they were just bashing seals over the head with a club! And it wasn't for food, it really depends on the situation!

I agree with lcb
bashing seals with clubs is cruel
Hunting for food is fine; those animals are killed more humanely than cows are in a slaughterhouse.
Is it cruel? When animals in the wild fall prey to their natural predators, the sight is not pretty, there is suffering involved. So, when the human being is the predator, if the method of killing is quick and the prey is heaten, i have no serious objection. I don't hunt but i do fish. Is it immoral? Depends on what morals you take as your own. I have no business going into other people's morals or ethics as long as human rights are not abused. I expect the same from others.
Good points thc and freedom. I've thought about how farm animals are slaughtered and I've also thought about that when a human intentionally hunts an animal, that it is quick (but I'm sure not painless). I've been verging on becoming a vegetarian for quite a while now and mostly it's because of something I witnessed. We were upstate NY and stopped at a local farm to buy produce; the "store" on the farm was also where the butcher was. Not being always being a bright boy :), I never made the connection that a butcher on a farm is indeed, dealing with very fresh meat. As we milled around, I found myself standing next to a lady and I noticed she was holding someting in her hand. It turned out to be a chicken that she was holding by it's legs. She was on line to have the buther defeather and do what ever it is butcher's do to dead chickens! If that site was not bad enough, the chicken started to move!! The bird was not dead at all..it had simply been clubbed unconscious...I then realized the fate that awaited that poor bird! Being an urban child, I had never really questioned where the meat on my plate had come from. To my family's dismay, I questioned it for the next week, without rest. I know that preparing beef and chicken for human consumption is different than hunting, but I have a hard time distinguishing between the two. (especially tough was the fact that my favorite cereal bowl was one that had chickens and other farm animals all over it :) This is a topic that require a great deal of thought, but I don't judge people who hunt because that is their choice.
I've thought about going vegan too but then I discovered how much of a mental boost eating meat is. A study with vegans found that creatine (only found in animal meat) raised their IQ scores by one standard deviation. This explains why vegan children are only slightly above average intelligence when their parents are usually university grads.
One should note: Fox hunting is an especially barbarous past-time, that commonly ends (from my understanding) with the dogs ripping the fox to pieces.
One should note: Fox hunting is an especially barbarous past-time, that commonly ends (from my understanding) with the dogs ripping the fox to pieces. by Cathexis on Dec 06, 2004 I've read this too. I feel sorry for the fox and the dogs (though I doubt that dog's feel remorse), I still feel bad for them because I imagine them to have guild over the fox hunt. :) Animlas are just so amazing that I personally could never, ever intentionally hurt one.
