A Prime Minister!? On television?! Lying!? Let me just go and have a lie down. The shock. Oh dear.
Perhaps he's training to be a President?
Maybe Martin was telling the truth to the Americans but lying to his own people. Sounds more plausible.
well when the Iraq war started it was a different PM, I would not support sending anyone to Iraq.

Are you really surprised that a politician lied?
canadian troops are in Afghanistan and weren't they also in Bosnia, maybe it is part of the reason, but yeah I thought the main reason was because they simply didn't want to.
I don't know which is accurate. It's probably a little bit of both, since Canada will be sending personnel to Iraq to help set-up and run the election (though those people would be non-military). Did the invastion of Afghanistan have UN approval?? Canadian troops are in Afghanistan, so if the UN did not approve that, maybe the Iraq question is less clear. As a politician though, like all others, the spin zone is in high gear, so we may never know the real reason.
yes the invasion in Afghanistan was UN approved.

Sounds as if the PM needs to wipe off those brown flecks on his lips and chin...
I don't know why he lied, canada made it clear they were not going into Iraq, it's no secret. Not unless he is saying his reason now for not going is the troop thing.
When the war started in Iraq, we had a different PM, as ABC said. At the time, his reasons were - that the war was not approved by the UN, Bush kept on changing his story (first it was WMD then it was regime change) and the majority of Canadians were against invading a sovereign state without proof of imminent threat or compelling evidence of WMD. It's true we didn't have enough troops to send anyway, but that wasn't part of the official stance back then. I think Martin is trying to cosy up to the American government by whatever means because it was part of his election platform.

Building a better relationship with the American government was one of Paul Martin's election promises, back last June, when he was elected.
